Dear Spartan Student and Parents,

If your cumulative weighted GPA is 3.75 or above, you are invited to apply for membership in the Doherty High School National Honor Society (NHS). NHS exists to recognize students who are outstanding among their peers in the areas of scholarship, community service, leadership, and character. It is the premier high school club nationally and a must for any high school resume.

PLEASE READ THIS INVITATION LETTER AND ALL FORMS YOU MAY RECEIVE COMPLETELY AND THOROUGHLY.  (Be sure to scroll all the way down to read this entire letter.)

In order to help the Faculty Council make informed selections, they are asking interested candidates to submit information for possible qualification. Please complete and submit the attached application form by the deadline date of Wednesday, December 19th, 2018. Your information will be reviewed by a faculty council who selects new members. If you have any questions about membership and/or filling out the form, please see Mr. Gardner in the Science Office. His role as NHS advisor is to help you; he is not a voting member of the Faculty Council. You may also find out more information about the National Honor Society at

Completion of the Information Form (complete and return it to Mr. Rob Gardner’s mailbox in the front office. The front office will timestamp each form turned in; NO LATE INFORMATION FORMS WILL BE ACCEPTED!!!!) Selection is based on the four cornerstone principles of NHS: service, leadership, character, and scholarship. These four areas are described below:

School Participation and Community Service: These sections of the form give you space to list extracurricular school participation (those activities for which you do not receive a grade or school credit) beginning with your freshman year. The Faculty Council looks for outstanding participation at Doherty High School and service in the community. Please fill out these sections as you would fill out an application for college. Do not use abbreviations that may be unknown to the Faculty Council. It is hard to evaluate the nature of your service if they do not know the organization. You may attach a separate sheet if you need more room. Please note that the adult sponsor of the activity MUST complete and sign the areas indicated on the form, and rate the degree of participation. A parent may only sign for one of these activities if he/she was a sponsor for a community service event.

Leadership In this section, please list only elected or appointed leadership roles (student government, captain of a team, team leader in a group, etc.). The faculty council will also use the ratings and information from your teachers to evaluate your leadership qualities.

Character A list of students who complete the information form and are found to be eligible for membership will be distributed to the Doherty staff. ANY staff member who knows you will be invited to rate your character on a scale of 0-4. This input, along with information from the discipline office, will be used to determine your character score.

Scholarship If your cumulative weighted GPA as of last semester is 3.75 or higher.

Notification of Selection Students
Students will be notified via emailed letter (school email address) of your selection or non-selection by January 25th, 2019. If you do not receive a letter or email, please see Mr. Gardner.

Expectations of Members
If selected for NHS membership, you will be required to maintain the minimum GPA (3.75 cumulative) and actively contribute to the organization. These contributions focus on four main areas:
1. Attendance: You will be required to attend an induction ceremony at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 31st, 2019 in the Doherty Auditorium. You must also attend a majority of chapter meetings and activities, held monthly on the 2nd Thursdays of each month in room 260.
2. Dues: $20 paid at the business office.
3. Community service: All members are expected to perform a minimum of 15 hours of community service per semester, keep a record of hours, and turn in the form by the due date.
4. Fund-raising: When a non-profit group is identified to receive support money, all members are required to assist in fund-raising.
Failing to meet any of these expectations is grounds for dismissal from NHS as determined by the Faculty Council. Once dismissed from NHS, a member is not eligible for membership again. Contact information for Mr. Gardner - email: phone: 719-328-6503
