D-11 NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
National Board Certification is a process with the goal of significantly improving student learning
and achievement. The National Board is focused on two strategic goals that reinforce each other:
National Board Certification is a voluntary assessment program designed to develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers, and to embed ongoing improvement in schools nationwide. While state teacher credentialing programs set the basic requirements to teach in each state, National Board Certified Teachers must demonstrate advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices. Completion of National Board Certification signifies that teachers have developed and demonstrated the skills required of an accomplished education professional.National Board Certification is a one-to-five-year certification process for experienced teachers who demonstrate how accomplished teachers transform the Five Core Propositions into practice. Teachers are required to develop four components that represent an analysis of their classroom practice as it relates to student learning. The components are designed to capture what a teacher knows and is able to do in real-time and in real-life settings through description, analysis and reflection of student learning that is captured on video and in student work samples. Teachers are also required to document their accomplishments in contributing to the advancement of the profession and the improvement of student learning as they collaborate with families, colleagues, the community, and other stakeholders.

The District 11 National Board Certification Program, established in 2002, is the leading program in the Pikes Peak region, serving teachers in D11 and surrounding districts. Program participants receive support as they work through the certification process and have further professional development opportunities after certification. Participation in the program is not a guarantee of certification, but candidates find the support invaluable. Nationally, 40% of candidates achieve certification on the first attempt. Research suggests, however, that students benefit from having a teacher who attempts regardless of certification status.
