WHAT IS THE BUSINESS PATHWAY?
In an ever changing global economy, business, industry, financial, media and service segments will demand employees with superlative work place skills, technical expertise, and exemplary academic knowledge. As a Doherty High School business education student you will be prepared to meet the demands of the future global economy with analytical skills, technical skills, reading and writing skills, computational skills and core knowledge and expertise. As both college and career ready individuals, Doherty business education students have strong communication skills, dedication, diligence and a strong work ethic. Students who explore business education courses have the ability to lead, collaborate and innovate in areas of finance, money management, accounting, business law & ethics, risk management, credit, taxes, insurance, communication, leadership, digital citizenship and economic principals impacting a local, national and international economy. Students will have the opportunities to obtain these skills in courses such as: Business and Marketing (BME), personal finance, accounting, and entrepreneurship. In addition to receiving high school credits, students are eligible for articulation and concurrent enrollment credits through Pikes Peak Community College (PPCC) and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS). Business and marketing and accounting credits earned through PPCC can be applied to a certificate or corresponding degree at PPCC.
As a student in accounting and personal finance students learn to read, analyze, interpret, understand, and apply financial information. In personal finance, students learn fundamental financial skills around saving and investing, budgeting, buying, banking, credit, and risk. An understanding of these principles will allow students to apply their knowledge to becoming a more responsible citizen in a global economy as well as developing strong financial literacy. In accounting, students take this financial knowledge to the next level by learning to apply accounting practices and principles. Additionally students learn how business and industry uses accounting information to manage their industry. Accounting is the language of business. Regardless of one’s role or responsibility within an organization, we perform our jobs more effectively and efficiently when we understand the language of accounting. Former accounting student and a 2014 Doherty graduate, Kendall says, “ Accounting ended up being one of the most impactful experiences of my time at Doherty. Participating in this class was not only practically helpful, as I learned many finance skills applicable to everyday life and earned college credit through dual enrollment, but I also grew as a person.”
As a student in Business and Marketing, students will be exposed to the dynamic processes and activities involved in Business and Marketing. Students learn meaningful real-world content applicable to all aspects of business administration. Students acquire a deep understanding of topics related to economics, finance, accounting, marketing, management, human relations, ethics, communication, leadership, career management, customer relations and digital citizenship, through a macro lens. A.S., a 2018 graduate remarks, “I received numerous opportunities that helped me narrow down what I wanted to do with my future, and critical information on different jobs, plans for the future, and different degrees options.”
Students in entrepreneurship focus on recognizing and managing business opportunity, including a school-based business. All students benefit from developing an appreciation and understanding for the practical application for all of the business functions including marketing, finance, accounting, management, economic environments, and digital citizenship.
As well as being exposed to these highly demanding and competitive fields in the classroom, students have co-curricular opportunities to apply their newly obtained skills. Students involved in these programs have an opportunity to participate in the nationally recognized Career and Technical Student Organization Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), which prepares students to become community-minded business leaders in a global society through relevant career preparation and leadership experiences. DECA, a robust organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe, is also another opportunity that awaits students. The 2014-2015 Doherty High School FBLA president shared that, “Opportunities in FBLA provided life changing experiences” and the 2017-2018 FBLA president shared that “FBLA helped me find my passion for creating"'At Doherty, we embed our mantra of We Before Me into our learning and service projects. We are proud to provide these CTE classes not only to prepare students for a successful future, but also to create a community of caring young people.

BUSINESS AND MARKETING TEACHERS
Ms. Charmyn Neumeyer
Business Education, Department Chair
Mrs. Neumeyer joined the DHS staff in 2001. She has taught at the college level for 12 years and K-12 for 25. She has 30 years of experience in the agriculture and small business side of business, finances, and leadership. Mrs. Neumeyer and her family are also small business owner/operators. In her time at DHS Mrs. Neumeyer has taught Computer Science, Business & Marketing, Accounting, Computer Applications for Business, Social Impact in Business and Language Arts. Mrs. Neumeyer holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Economics and a Master of Arts in Career and Technology Education.
Mr. Bruce Cole
Mr. Cole joined the DHS staff in 2013. He taught at the college level for 5 years and K-12 for 15. He has 26 years experience in Management of for profit and non profit organizations. He is also a successful entrepreneur. Mr. Cole holds a BS in Business Administration/Finance, MA in Education Administration, MS in Organizational development, and an Ed.S. in Curriculum and Teaching. He is CTE credentialed in Business/Marketing. Mr. Cole is also the Co-Advisor for DECA.
Mr. Andrew Schafer
Mr. Schafer has been teaching for 28 years. Most of which has been teaching some kind of Technology course. Since being in D11 the past 9 years, he has taught Computer Applications, Game Programming, Computer Science and Intro to Programming/Computer Science. He has his Bachelor of Science Degree from Valley City State University in Business Education and Physical Education and a Master of Education in Educational Administration from North Dakota State University.
