    Hello Falcon families!

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!! We are so excited to see our students and families again. Freedom has amazing, dedicated teachers who took time this summer to learn innovative and creative ways to engage students in their own learning.

I have to share that 27 of our staff members participated in a three day training at the Colorado Education Initiative (CEI) conference. CEI is an independent non-profit organization that collaborates with the Colorado Department of Education. Their mission is to accelerate educational improvement and innovation across Colorado. Our participation at the CEI conference is part of the continuation of our DoDEA Next Generation Learning grant.

This year is going to be the best ever! There are many areas in which we will build on what we started last school year. Capturing Kids Hearts will continue to be our positive behavior strategy. We will continue with a strong instructional focus on math growth and achievement for every learner. Targeted instruction, flexible groups, and progress monitoring will allow us to be responsive to student needs. Student Exhibitions of Learning will continue this year, with opportunities for parents to come in to see their child demonstrate (in a variety of ways) what they learned.

Due to our remarkable community support in PTA fundraising efforts and our grant, we will have a designated robotics and innovation room! In this space, we will have a class set of Spherobots. We will also have BeeBots, Makey-Makey kits (electronics) and Lego learning kits. We were able to purchase a class set of iPads through the DoDEA grant to support the controlling and coding of the robots. Students will learn to control robots, how to code, and how to create using technology and hands on application of resources. Also, we are developing our “low-tech” Maker Space opportunities. We will have a Maker Space workshop out in the portable, and Maker Space carts with all kinds of materials on carts.

We will begin implementing Competency Based Education in the area of math this year. Competency Based Education is a component of Next Generation and student centered learning. More information about this implementation will be provided at our Parent information meeting on August 16th, and watch our web page for updated information.

We are thrilled to tell you that our new webpage launched August1st! Along with the new webpage, we have a new D11 mobile app, and a new communication system called D11 Loop! Here is the link for more directions and more information: https://co02201641.schoolwires.net/APP

We can’t wait to see your families and our students at our teacher Meet and Greet and the Parent Information Meeting on August 16th.

    With warm regards,

Sandra Park, Principal, and the Freedom Falcon Staff
