Bachelor of Science Degree Alternative Teacher Certification

Ms. Elizabeth (Betsy) Bastien

After graduating with a Veterinary Science Degree from the University of Arizona in 2003, I entered the working world as an Apprentice Zookeeper at the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, AZ. With an apprenticeship under my belt, I was then hired by the Dallas Zoo & Aquarium in Texas. A few years of hard work in the animal husbandry field, with very little pay, sent me looking for new adventures and it turns out the Peace Corp was calling my name. Unfortunately the onboarding process was very slow moving, and by the time I received my acceptance letter and nomination for an environmental studies program in Africa, I was already moving on in a totally different direction. At this point, I had begun coaching lacrosse at Highland Park HS and with a few nudges from friends, I decided to become a teacher. My enthusiasm for science and the natural world had always been contagious, so I was alternatively certified and taught 8th grade science for the Dallas Independent School District for three years. Eventually I moved to Galveston, TX where I taught 5th-8th grade science and HS Biology for four year at a very small school. At the end of my time there, my daughter Piper was born and I became a stay at home mom. We moved to the Springs in January of 2020 to be closer to family and the mountains. I'm so very excited to be at Mann MS teaching 8th grade Science and sharing my passion with a whole new group of students this year. Although it may look and feel different from previous years, you are not alone, we are in this together and I am here to help in any way possible. Please contact me with your questions or concerns. I truly believe, this could turn out to be the best year of my teaching career :)
