Updates to D11 School Start - Introduction

    • Potential delayed start date to Aug. 24th
      • School Board voting this week on delay
    • New reopening options being reviewed
      • Slow Start:
        • 2-week transition period bringing students in on a staggered schedule
        • Full in-person option in place by Sept. 7th
          • Online will still be offered
        • Students would be broken up into groups
          • Group determination still being considered
            • Possibly alphabetic or by grade/classroom
          • Online only option is available for enrollment on the D11 enrollment page
            • This option keeps you attached to your school and assigned a Steele teacher
            • This also keeps our enrollment numbers in order to keep all our teachers
          • Homeschool / Online Only / Distance Learning defined
            • Homeschool = Students are withdrawn from Steele and parents are responsible for child’s education at home.
              • Programs are available but not associated with D11
            • Online only = Students stay enrolled in their school and online learning curriculum is provided by an online teacher
              • Students would still be assigned to a Steele teacher to remain in contact with their peers
              • Online teachers may be Steele teachers or different instructors working with the Steele community
              • Curriculum will be based on D11 standards
              • Must commit to a school quarter attendance
              • Quarter-by-quarter offering. Students may switch back to in-person at the quarters.
            • Distance Learning = Entire student body will be virtual and attached to their teachers at Steele.
              • Online learners may be able to transfer to distance learning. More information to come.
            • School survey to be distributed this week asking for parent input on what options they are looking at for enrollment for the start of school.

    Q&A Session

    Online Only schooling questions:

    • May you switch at half year?
      • Yes – Qtr by Qtr attendance
    • May you switch from online to distance if that goes into effect?
      • That is the hope, more clarification is needed
    • What would a typical online day look like?
      • Schoology and SeeSaw would be the organizing applications used to structure the assignments and track accountability
      • 45 min-2 hrs of contact time, depending on grade and projects. 2-4.5 hrs of work time (including online time) as appropriate for grade levels
    • Who would be teaching the Online Only option?
      • Depending on enrollment, Steele teachers may be teach the online if possible.
      • If all teachers want to do it, classrooms may look different and possibly have one online teacher and one in-person again depending on enrollment in the Online Only.
      • There may be different online teacher to work with D11 curriculum
      • There may also be webex meetings that happen with the class and online.
    • If start in-person, can you change to online?
      • We ask that you make a decision to either commit to the first quarter for online or come in-person.
    • Is there a deadline to enroll in the Online Only option?
      • Currently, there is not.
    • Will there be project-based curriculum with the Online Only?
      • Yes, along with core subject assignments.
    • What are some of the Online Only expectations?
      • No hard copies or physical textbooks will be issued
      • Depending on enrollment, several Steele teachers would like to do both.
      • Parents will need to be involved and sign a contract with the Online Only option.
        • This should outline parent involvement expectations.
      • Will there be Online Only enrichment offered?
        • It may not be a Steele teacher teaching it, but enrichment classes will be offered.
      • How much time would the students be using a device during the day?
        • Currently, the expectation is 1-2 hours of screen time and 4.5 hours of work per day.
      • If a parent wants to do an Online Only co-op with other students that are not enrolled in the same schools, would they need to be?
        • The students could work together but they would not be able to work on projects together between schools.
        • Because we are keeping students attached to schools and teachers at their school, some project-based learning may be different between schools.
      • Will GT classes be taught?
        • These classes will be incorporated within the school day
        • The classes may or may not be taught by our GT Teacher Mrs. Wriedt, but she will be coordinating all GT with any online teacher assigned to work with Steele.
      • Will there be a more rigorous schedule than in the Spring?
        • Yes, and participation will be assessed more rigorously as well.
        • More accountability in grading.
        • Small online group meetings are more effective than large group meetings.

    Mask, Health and Safety questions:

    • Kindergarteners and 1st graders may have a tough time keeping masks on during the day. What are the expectations on wearing masks for the younger grades?
      • As commented, the governor states that those under 11 are not required to wear masks
      • At Steele, we will always foster mask wearing and have them wear them as much as possible with the understanding that some may not be able to keep them on.
      • We will be having mask breaks throughout the day
      • Recess will not require masks
    • Will there be social distancing in the classrooms?
      • With updated recommendations from county health, 3 foot distancing in classrooms is permitted.
      • Classrooms will be organized in such a way to accommodate this, however, many of Steele’s classrooms use tables instead of desks which may make it harder to enforce.
    • Will there be temperature screenings at school?
      • Parents will check for symptoms each day before students leave for school.
      • We will have some temperature screeners at school. More details on this to come.
      • There will be a quarantine room at Steele for any student that displays Covid-19 symptoms and the student will be isolated from other students that may need non-Covid attention
        • Capp’s office is the designated quarantine room. Ventilation and isolation is available there.
      • If a student has a sibling displaying symptoms of Covid-19, should that student stay home?
        • Families should follow CDC and El Paso County Health guidance on this matter.
      • Will the school be monitoring for Covid-19 symptoms?
        • The Steele staff will be looking for any students that may not be feeling well and then follow protocol.
          • This protocol is in development with the D11 Health teams
        • If a student is home due a quarantine of the family, how will the student keep up with the class?
          • If the class does not need to be sent home due to exposure, the teacher will follow-up with updates and assignments to work on during quarantine.
          • If the class does need to be sent home, the class will go Distance Learning for the 10-day
          • Contact tracing will be done at the district level as well.

    Curriculum, classroom and teacher questions:

    • Some curriculum will not work with masks in the younger grades such as Orton Gillingham for Kindergarten. How will the teachers adjust to working with students on this type of learning style?
      • The teacher can break the students up into small groups where they can take off their masks.
        • The teacher could then use a face shield so that the students can see their mouths to help them.
      • Will there be teacher contact with students in advance?
        • That is our goal. We would like to get the classroom lists out earlier so that each teacher could reach out and contact their new students via phone call, postcard, etc.
        • We are hoping this can be done by Aug. 10
          • We need to know the Online only enrollment numbers before we can fully develop classroom lists
        • Will kindergarteners be able to meet their teacher in advance?
          • Kindergarten teachers always make contact with their classes in advance of the year.
        • Will the teachers be getting training on the new programs and technology?
          • Yes, see below:
          • Teachers return on Aug. 10 and have several training days scheduled.
            • Schoology and SeeSaw classroom organization programs
            • Some teachers in the building have expertise on these and will be great resources to tap when needed.
          • Online training sessions are ready for them to complete now.
        • Will there be specials available for in-person learning?
          • Yes
          • The school schedule may be updated to accommodate various ways to minimize having to change classrooms
            • For example: One week may have 3rd grade gym only with similar ideas for Art and Music.
          • We will try and do as much outside learning with specials as possible.
        • Will there be speech therapy available for students?
          • Yes, all external services that your student needs will still be available.
            • SPED, GT, ELL
          • How will testing be handled such as DIBELS, etc. When most of those tests need in-person manipulation?
            • We will work on those procedures with our teachers and parents in order to make it safe if in-person is needed.
          • Will there be training available for parents on school technology?
            • Having small training sessions on Schoology/SeeSaw would be great.
              • Will look into this option.
            • Will all students get electronic devices to use?
              • Yes, every student including multiple siblings in a household.
              • K-1 will get IPads
              • 3-5 will get Chromebooks
              • Technology pick-up days will need to be scheduled.
            • Chromebook did not allow Webex meetings, will this be addressed?
            • Yes, we will make sure to have our technology ready to accommodate all applications needed for Online and Distance Learning.

    Building and school year questions:

    • May my student bring their own lunch when it was mentioned that no outside food may be brought in?
      • Yes, your student may bring their own lunch
      • Outside food such as classroom treats, birthday celebration food, party food, etc. Is not allowed at this time.
    • Will the school year be extended if they push back the start of the school year?
      • No mention of an extended school year yet. More clarification is needed.
    • Will visitors and parent volunteers be allowed in the building?
      • We will be limiting any adult contact in the building.
      • No parent volunteers and limited visitors at the start of the school year.
