The Advanced Placement (AP) program at Doherty High School offers a number of challenging, interesting and relevant courses.  Through college-level AP courses, you enter a universe of knowledge that might otherwise remain unexplored in high school.  Through AP Exams, you have the opportunity to earn credit or advanced standing at most of the nation's colleges and universities. Public universities in the state of Colorado generally offer credit for AP exam scores of 3-4-5 (varies at each university).

The Program

Pre-AP courses deliver grade-level appropriate instruction through focused course frameworks, instructional resources, learning checkpoints, and collaborative educator workshops. They are designed to support all students across varying levels of abilities through focus. The Program grants educators and their students the space and time for deep engagement with content.

The Pre-AP designation signals consistent, high standards in focused courses that help build, strengthen, and reinforce students’ content knowledge and critical thinking skills.

• Offer every student access to a high-quality education that prepares them for success in high school and beyond
• Provide educators with engaging, targeted course materials that help them ensure their students successfully master grade-level materials.

AVID! Advancement Via Individual Determination is a program designed to prepare students for college, career, and life. During this elective course, organizational, note-taking, studying, research, collaboration, reading, and writing skills are taught. Each grade level has their own class during the day, and we aide our students (most being first generational college applicants) in applying for college, accepting a school, and applying for scholarships. We encourage our students to take higher-level courses, keep a “C” or better grade point average, and to have good attendance and behavior. The Gifted and Talented coordinator at Doherty is committed to providing challenging experiences for all learners that build on individual strengths and optimize academic potential. We provide instructional and affective support and encourage appropriate programming opportunities for highly capable students. Doherty High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (Navy JROTC) is unique program that can significantly enhance a high school student's experience and post high school career opportunities. Taking JROTC DOES NOT obligate you to join the military.

The Navy JROTC’s accredited curriculum emphasizes discipline, citizenship and leadership development, as well as our maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and naval topics such as the fundamentals of naval operations, seamanship, navigation and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by extra-curricular activities of community service, academic, athletic armed drill competitions, field meets, visits to colleges or other activities, marksmanship, and physical fitness training.

Navy JROTC acts a stepping stone to achieving the goal of attending a service academy such as the Naval Academy, Air Force Academy or West Point. Doherty Navy JROTC Cadet, Matthias Williams, class of 2018, received an appointment to West Point and the head of Doherty Navy JROTC has 3 nominations to the Naval Academy every year. Receiving a college ROTC scholarship, no matter which branch of service, is significantly enhanced by taking JROTC in high school.    

This program is a must take for any student who has a desire to join the military.  Upon graduation from boot camp, they will be eligible for advanced promotion up to E3. Normal entry into the military is at the E1 level.  This is almost a $400 dollar raise, just for taking JROTC in high school.

Our English Language Development (ELD) program supports culturally and linguistically diverse students so that they can participate equally and meaningfully in the classroom. Our ELD program provides rigorous instruction to English language learners (ELLs) to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in order for them to achieve grade-level proficiency. We strive to prepare students for the workforce and post-secondary schooling. Our students speak a variety of languages, and are at all different levels of English acquisition.
