Galileo Drama Department is made up of 3 different groups: drama classes, drama club, and our annual spring play.
Drama develops self esteem, public speaking, working as a team, creative thinking, problem solving, developing empathy for others, and reading comprehension.
We present our major theater production early March each year. In the past, we’ve put on comedies, murder mysteries, classic fantasies, and fractured fairy tales. We’ve always exceeded expectations for what to expect from a middle school show, and always aim to thoroughly entertain our audience. Auditions are open to all Galileo students early December. Once the cast list is posted- we collaborate in after school play rehearsals perfecting our show for ten weeks (three days a week for two hours a day). We always hire on Galileo students for backstage and tech crews. Galileo alumni and our families help with set pieces, props, and costumes. We hope you’ll join us this spring!
Every Tuesday and Thursday during first semester, Drama Club members join together. The purpose of drama club is to give its members a “crash course” in theater basics, while allowing returners to further their craft by leading exercises. They are introduced to acting and speaking in front of others, projecting their voices, articulating their words, basic body positioning for the stage, pantomiming, stage combat. All of these topics are presented through improv games and mini lessons. Skits and monologues are also rehearsed and performed. At least two times per year, Galileo Drama club members attend an after school field trip to visit D11’s high school productions.
Galileo currently offers beginning drama classes to all of its students. Drama classes are project based and cover acting basics, character building, monologue and scene development, memorization, and performance analysis. Projects are presented as mini lessons with modeled examples. Our class plays a lot of theater/improv games to develop the needed skills while building an ensemble. The class uses rubrics to evaluate performances, and constantly gives positive specific feedback to peers.
