 Use Less Paper
- Set up your printers to default to printing double-sided
- Do you really need to print? Could you post the assignment online, write it on a class board, or simply bookmark it to your favorites?
- Rather than having a spiral bound notebook for each subject, try using pre-holed paper that you can use on a clipboard during class then organize into separate 3-ring binders at the end of the day - a great lesson in Organization!
Reuse and Upcycle
- Utilize the blank side of printed materials for "to do" lists and for doodling
- Upcycle items into new uses, be creative and make a robot or school project from found objects
Food and Water
- Compost food scraps to close the loop for enriching the soils
- Take only what you will eat
- Bring a reusable water bottle, preferably aluminum instead of plastic to fill up on water from the tap
- Turn off the water faucet when not in use, check that it is 100% turned off, and report any leaky faucets or toilets to faculty
Fix, Mend, Trade with a Friend
- Visit your library, a local used book store, or venture out to a University library for books
- Set up trade events for holiday gifts, school supplies, and used books throughout the year, you will most likely find that someone is very interested in your unwanted "stuff" cluttering your lockers and homes
- Do you really need to purchase that very expensive calculator or can a student who has already gone through that class simply lend it to you for the school year? What else could you borrow or lend to a fellow student?
- Fix it! A broken shoelace does not mean that the shoes are unusable, simply replace the shoelace.
Recycle
- Divert trash to the landfill by recycling paper, plastic, and glass into recycle bins at your school
