Galileo Middle School

Galileo offers strong, positive, diverse community where students learn in a safe and fun environment. Galileo is home to a large geodesic dome greenhouse and many raised garden beds, which is part of our Advanced Hands-On Science. In addition to learning science content (biology, botany, and some chemistry), students will learn about organic gardening techniques and sustainability. The food we help produce is served in meals at Galileo and in other District 11 schools. Our scholars have daily access to hands-on learning, with real-world experiences, using 21st Century technology throughout the school, becoming creative thinkers and lifelong learners, and empowering the whole child to profoundly impact our world.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)

AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

AVID empowers students by explicitly teaching them the hidden curriculum of school by developing time management, organization, interactive note-taking, inquiry, collaboration, writing, and reading skills.   

The AVID elective class supports students as they engage in the most rigorous courses appropriate for them. The purpose of the AVID program is to restructure the teaching methods of an entire school and to open access to the curricula that will ensure post-secondary choices for all students.

The instructional program focuses on methodologies that will help students prepare and participate in a rigorous preparatory curriculum. All AVID students are highly encouraged to challenge themselves by taking honors classes, with the goal of completing at least one Advanced Placement course before high school graduation.
