Space Available Information

Our D11 Transportation strategy and commitment is to first and foremost ensure all students within our school neighborhood’s Transported Areas are able to access our transportation assets. Therefore, school bus routes are primarily designed by setting bus route stops in locations for students who live within the various Transported Areas. 

A second part of our transportation strategy is to maximize our ridership utilization. When a bus route is not filling the capacity of the bus, D11 offers ridership options on Space Available basis.  

Space Available service is an opportunity for:

  1. Students who live in a school’s attendance area but do not live in the school’s transported area. For example, some students may live within a one-mile radius of the school and by policy not within the Transported Area; but, may live only a one-quarter mile distance from a bus stop that is within that school’s Transported Area. 
  2. Students who are attending a D11 school as Choice Enrolled or Transfer students.

Parents and/or legal guardians interested in Space Available opportunities can apply online for Space Available Transportation starting the first working day of August each year.  Applications for Space Available Transportation will be valid throughout the grades served by the school level at the assigned stop for the assigned school.  

This service is not immediately available on the first day of school and not until we are able to evaluate our route’s ridership capacity. We will work to communicate Space Available assignments as late as the week after Labor Day each school year, and potentially sooner.   

Please note:

  • Space Available service may be cancelled to ensure space on our busses are provided for students who live within our school neighborhood’s Transported Areas. 
  • Other options for getting your child to and from school should be in place at all times.   
  • Parents and/or legal guardians are responsible for their student’s safety to and from the assigned Space Available school bus stop.
