MIES
  • Greetings, Midland Community!

Midland Elementary School is a neighborhood/choice school implementing the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) for the last 15 years.    Midland is the only school in Colorado Springs School Distrct 11 who offer the IB PYP.  The IB PYP at Midland provides our students with an education which prepares them for tomorrow’s world.

Many unique instructional components are offered at Midland.  Our dedicated, full-time instructional staff  teachers, part-time student support staff and paraprofessionals, work together to provide a research based education for our students.  Our program includes a full-day kindergarten program.   We also multiage many of the classes so that students’ needs are met based on their academic performance.   To help promote a well-balanced education, we provide small group instruction and one-on-one attention for those who need it.

Seasonally we also provide a rich After-School-Activity program including certified-staff hosted programs. These have included in the past, Midland Scholars, Math Tutoring, Homework Help, Theater Club, 4-H, Lego Club, garden club, sports and student council.

Change is a key concept in both the IB PYP and the world.  In keeping with this concept, many exciting changes are taking place at Midland.  The students at Midland are making significant progress in raising the number of proficient and advanced scores in reading, writing and mathematics each year.

Midland also has a core group of very active and involved parents. Through formal organizations such as the PTA and informal volunteer opportunities, our parents are able to play a key role in our partnership of educating Midland’s students.

Midland is an excellent school of “choice”.  Please call and schedule an appointment for further information and a tour of our school.

    The Primary Years Program

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB PYP) is an international curriculum, a philosophy and a way of teaching, developed by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO).  The IB PYP is designed for all students in the primary grades.  At Midland, the IB PYP is offered in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

The IB PYP is unique in that its focus is on the development of the whole child, affecting hearts as well as minds, while addressing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academics. The IB PYP schools ultimately promote creating citizens who are well-balanced individuals.

    The Academic Philosophy of IB

The academic philosophy of the International Baccalaureate Organisation is identified in its mission statement, which was adopted in 1996:

Through comprehensive and balanced curriculum, coupled with challenging assessments, the International Baccalaureate Organisation aims to assist schools in their endeavors to develop the individual talents of young people and teach them to relate the experience of the classroom to the realities of the world outside.   Beyond intellectual rigor and high academic standards, strong emphasis is placed on the ideals of international understanding and responsible citizenship, to the end that IB students may become critical and compassionate thinkers, lifelong learners and informed participants in local and world affairs, conscious of the shared humanity that binds all people together, while respecting the variety of cultures and attitudes that makes for the richness of life.
