District 11's K-5 Literacy and Language Arts program is dedicated to ensuring all students have access to opportunities to learn to read, write, and communicate. We seek to provide a comprehensive instructional program aligned to Colorado Academic Standards for Reading, Writing, and Communicating, and recognize the power of early literacy. We provide instruction in the five essential components for reading instruction: phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Our teachers also use a balance of complex fiction and non-fiction texts with an emphasis on text-based support and analytical writing. Through our work, we hope to help students learn to appreciate, enjoy, and use literacy to shape their futures.
