• CSSD11 Food & Nutrition Services procedure for Accommodating Children with Special Dietary Needs

Here are some facts from the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network:
    • Scientists report an increase in food allergies during the past decade. In particular, peanut allergy among young children doubled between 1997 and 2002.
    • Food allergy is the leading cause of anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) outside the hospital setting
    • Eight foods account for 90 percent of all reactions in the U.S. : milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (walnuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios, pecans, etc.), wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish.
    • Food allergies result in 30,000 emergency room visits annually and 150 to 200 deaths.
    • 12 million Americans have food allergies.
    • There is no cure for a food allergy; only strict food avoidance can prevent a reaction.
    • One in every 17 children under the age of 3 has a food allergy.
Colorado Springs School District 11 does not provide “substitutions” for fluid milk/lactose "intolerance" unless this special dietary need rises to the level of a dietary disability (as documented by a licensed physician).  Bottled water is available as a beverage offering daily at D11 schools with traditional and grab n' go breakfast programs, as well as at lunch in all D11 schools at no charge.
