• ART CLASSES

    There is considerable research on the academic value of students receiving instruction in the Visual Arts. Students will learn the elements of art and principles of design. They will learn about art in relation to history, culture, and the community. They will also recognize and use the visual arts as a form of communication, and critique works of art through analysis, assessment, and evaluation.

    Some courses may require materials fees upon board approval.

    Note: Some art courses offer Postsecondary Workforce Readiness credits and/or articulated college credit through Pikes Peak Community College or CU succeed courses offering college credit through UCCS.


    IBMYP ART 1 and 2

    Course Length: 1 Semester each        Grade Level: 9-12

    Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities)

    In these courses, you will learn the rules of art and the elements in order to unlock the mysteries of art. Then discover what works. Armed with this information, take charge of the media to express yourself in two-dimensional works of art. This class will give you a chance to explore a variety of media: drawing, painting, printmaking, photography and/or computer art. In keeping with the requirements of the IB Middle Years Program framework of curriculum planning, instruction and assessment, this course requires students to make connections between classroom learning and experiences in the real world of the 21st century.


    IBMYP ART AND DESIGN HONORS

    Course Length: 1 Semester                  Grade Level: 9,10

    Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities)

    Prerequisite: Recommended for students taking multiple core honors classes in 9th and/or 10th grade

    IBMYP Art & Design provides students with opportunities to develop the ability to express themselves and their ideas about the world they live in, working both independently and as cooperative members of a group. Visual arts involve students in a unique combination of psychomotor skills, factual knowledge and understanding that promotes issues; provide insights, opinions, solutions and resolutions; and reflect on, appreciate and evaluate artwork. A developmental workbook will be required which reflects their development, investigations, and shows a record of their creative process.


    CERAMICS 1

    Course Length: 1 Semester                  Grade Level: 10-12

    Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities)

    Prerequisite: IBMYP Art 1

    Ceramics 1 is a course designed to offer students experience in hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. After taking Art 1 you will be able to design and plan your creative ceramic forms.  The cultural and appreciative aspects of art are incorporated into the course through various instructional resources and art production experiences.


    CERAMICS 2

    Course Length: 1 Semester                  Grade Level: 10-12

    Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities)

    Prerequisite: Ceramics 1

    This course will further explore your ability in the ceramics process.


    GENERAL ART 3H and 4H

    Course Length: 1 Semester each        Grade Level: 10-12

    Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities)

    Prerequisite: IBMYP Art 2 or IBMYP 2D Art and Design 2

    Art 3H and 4H are honors level art courses that require the artist to investigate and demonstrate development of new skills and techniques. The artist must also be able direct their own problem-solving skills while displaying technical competence with a variety of media and relate their creations to cultural or historical influences while displaying technical competence with a variety of media. Media may include, but not be limited to, drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture.


     IBMYP DIGITAL PHOTO DESIGN 1 and 2

    Digital camera recommended

    Course Length: 1 Semester each          Grade Level: 9-12 Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities, Computer Ed/Tech or Postsecondary Workforce Readiness)

    Prerequisite: None

    These courses introduce students to photography through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, assignments, and critiques. Students will learn to see photographically via an exploration of the basic tools, techniques and aesthetics of photography, with an emphasis on the creative use of camera controls, exposure, an overview of film and digital processing, and an awareness of the critical issues in contemporary photography.

    PHO120 Fundamentals of Photography upon completion of IBMYP Digital Photo Design 1 and 2


    DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY 3H and 4H

    Digital camera required

    Course Length: 1 Semester each          Grade Level: 10-12

    Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities)

    Prerequisite: Digital Photo Design 2

    Enter the world of the commercial photographer. Gain mastery over your digital SLR and begin building your photography portfolio. Concentrate on the commercial aspects that the working photographer faces daily which include portraiture, landscapes, and photojournalism to name a few. Focus on a genre and demonstrate your skills through a portfolio you produce. Introduction to marketing work.


    IBMYP ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR 1,2

    Course Length: 2 semesters                     Grade Level: 10-12 Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities, Computer Ed/Tech or Postsecondary Workforce Readiness)

    Prerequisite: None

    Concentrates on the high-end capabilities of Adobe Illustrator as an illustration, design and vector drawing tools. Students learn how to use the tools to create digital artwork used in web design, print media, and digital screen design. Course competencies and outline follow those set by the Adobe certified Associate exam in Visual Communication using Adobe Illustrator.

    NOTE: THIS COURSE WILL ARTICULATE WITH PPSC MGD112: Adobe Illustrator I upon completion of IBMYP Adobe Illustrator 1 and 2


    IBMYP ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 1,2


    Course Length: 2 semesters                     Grade Level: 10-12 Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities, Computer Ed/Tech, or Postsecondary Workforce Readiness)

    Prerequisite: none

    Concentrates on the high-end capabilities of Adobe Photoshop as an illustration, design and photo retouching tools. Students explore a wide range of selection and manipulation techniques applied to photos, graphics and videos. Course competencies and outline follow those set out by the Adobe Certified Associate exam in Visual Communication Using Adobe Photoshop.

    NOTE: THIS COURSE WILL ARTICULATE WITH PPSC MGD111: Adobe Photoshop I upon completion of IBMYP Adobe Photoshop 1 and 2 and Industry Certificate

    The visual arts course encourages students to challenge their own creative and cultural expectations and boundaries.

    Students develop analytical skills in problem-solving and divergent thinking, while working towards technical proficiency and confidence as art-makers. In addition to exploring and comparing visual arts from different perspectives and in different contexts, engage in, experiment with and critically reflect upon a wide range of contemporary practices and media. Designed for students who want to go on to further study of visual arts in higher education as well as for those who are seeking lifelong enrichment through visual arts.


    IB ART DESIGN 5,6,7,8 HIGHER LEVEL (HL)

    IB assessments (internal and external) are a requirement for this course.

Students develop analytical skills in problem-solving and divergent thinking, while working towards technical proficiency and confidence as art-makers. In addition to exploring and comparing visual arts from different perspectives and in different contexts, to engage in, experiment with and critically reflect upon a wide range of contemporary practices and media. Designed for students who want to go on to further study of visual arts in higher education as well as for those who are seeking lifelong enrichment through visual arts.


    AP STUDIO ART 1,2 HONORS

    Course Length: 2 Semesters                Grade Level: 11-12

    Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities)

    Prerequisite: Completion of IBMYP art courseware or teacher approval

    Studio Art AP is an honors course designed for students with exceptional ability and a high degree of interest in the practice of art. Students submit a portfolio of work to examiners in May in an attempt to qualify for credit and advanced placement in American colleges. Work with any medium and will be expected to reflect three areas of concern: breadth, concentration, and quality.

    NOTE: this course is two semesters and can qualify students for direct college crediting through UCCS
