• OUTDOOR RECREATION LEADERSHIP & PROJECT BIKE TECH

    Outdoor Rectreation Leadership and Project Bike Tech are Career and Technical Education programs that bring together business, community and social interests that allow students to explore personal passions that connect to the environment and community in which they live. Students engage in training and learning about community and natural resources that are used in our community to increase the quality of living for all community members. Students will learn about themselves through challenging courses which will give them creative thinking and problem solving in spaces that they may not be familar with. They will learn about the growing career opportunities in non-profit, government and private spaces related to the use of trails, parks and open spaces with a focus on transportation careers connected to mobile community development.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS AND OUTCOMES

    Career Pathways Bikes
    PROJECT BIKE TECH

    A two-year sequence designed to introduce and excite students about career pathways within the bicycle industry and prepare them for entry-level positions as bicycle technicians or retail associates.

    Students will be awarded the Bicycle Technology Level 1 industry endorsed certificate by establishing career readiness skills in combination with the professional technical skill standards.

     Career Pathways

    MOUNTAIN BIKING

    Introduces basic mountain biking skills and techniques. The primary emphasis is to gain an understanding of the basic principles of mountain biking.

    Students develop skills and techniques for all riding situation, review bicycle anatomy, and basic maintenance and repairs.

     Backpacking

    BACKPACKING

    Provides skills related to wilderness travel & outdoor adventure.

    Emphasizes knowledge of backpacking skills, survival techniques, proper physical conditioning, route finding, equipment selection, & an understanding & respect for the environment.

     Career Pathways Wilderness

    WILDERNESS FIRST AID

    This course teaches advanced skills to be used in emergencies when help from professional first responders may be far away.

    This course aligns with OSHAs Best Practices for Workplace First Aid Training Programs.

    Students will successfully complete all written examinations & skill evaluations, as presented in the course, in accordance with the sponsoring agency.

     Wilderness First Responder

    WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER

    This course provides the student with those skills and emergency medical care techniques used by guides, trip leaders and others providing primary care in backcountry settings.

    The student will be able to respond correctly to those medical and trauma situations commonly encountered when entry into the EMS system is delayed or unlikely.

     

    Leave No Trace

    WILDERNESS ETHICS & LEAVE NO TRACE

    Emphasizes the motivation, aesthetics, & ethics of wilderness.

    Examines viewpoints from Native American, Western, historic, & modern environmental writers.

    & Introduces the student to the principles of Leave No Trace & prepares students to teach Leave No Trace curriculum in a variety of outdoor & urban settings.

    This class is a must for guides, outfitters, outdoor educators, agency employees, scout/youth group leaders, or anyone who cares about minimizing impact on the Colorado backcountry.

     BAckcountry

    BACKCOUNTRY COOKING & NAVIGATION

    Focuses on menu planning, nutritional requirements for wilderness camping, and meal preparations. Includes cooking a backcountry meal.

    & Combines the topics of using different topographical maps and compasses in order to safely plan a route in the wilderness with Orienteering (organized competitive cross-country land navigation). Orienteering rules, symbols, clues, and clubs are covered.

     Outdoor Leadership

    OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP

    Introduces the development, acquisition, and application of outdoor leadership skills and knowledge.

    Focuses on the latest information philosophy, and techniques necessary to safely conduct outdoor programs and expeditions as an outdoor leader.

    Skills are applied under actual field conditions. Emphasizes minimal impact camping, wilderness ecology, judgment and decision making, group dynamics and trip logistics.

    These skills enhance effectiveness as an outdoor leader.
