GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Aligned Programming Pathways: Business and Industry Engagement: Establish a structured, sustainable process through which education and employer communities come together and use economic development data to set priorities. Career Pathways: Design and implement policies and related strategies to strengthen and scale career pathways that span secondary and postsecondary levels, include rigorous core academic and career-technical content, provide high-quality work-based learning opportunities and culminate in credentials that open doors to high-skill, high-demand jobs.
Capacity: the number of students a school building can hold
Career Pathways: A series of connected education and training programs, work experiences, and student support services that enable individuals to secure a job or advance in a demand industry occupation.
Career and Technical Education (CTE): An education pathway that provides direction and instruction in areas leading to careers, work preparation, and life skills.
Dual Language Immersion Program (DLIP): Children spend all or a large portion of their day learning, in a natural way, a particular foreign language. It is a method of teaching a second language in which the learners’ second language (L2) is the medium of classroom instruction. Through this method, learners study school subjects, such as math, science, and social studies, in their L2. The main purpose of this method is to foster bilingualism.
Enrollment: The number of students attending a particular school or division.
Ethnicity: A socially defined category of people who identify with each other based on a perceived shared social experience or ancestry. Membership of an ethnic group tends to be associated with and ideologies of shared cultural heritage, ancestry, history, homeland, language or dialect, and with symbolic systems such as religion, mythology and ritual, cuisine, dressing style, physical appearance, etc.
Expanded College Options: The ability for a student to hold concurrent enrollment with a college while attending high school or by articulation with another school for credits toward graduation and/or a degree or certification.
Gifted Magnet Program (GMP): The District 11 Gifted Magnet Program fosters academic talent and provides social-emotional support in an immersive program housed at two elementary and two middle schools throughout the district. Students are accepted into the GMP based on a variety of assessment results.
International Baccalaureate: A non-profit, certified program for students aged 3 to 19 that seeks to “develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world.”
Pathway Schools: These are public schools with specialized curriculum. These schools draw students from their normal boundaries, as well as across areas of the district and other districts. They are free and open to anyone. Pathway schools are accountable to state standards,as well as the components of quality Neighborhood Schools.
Online School ( virtual school or e-school or cyber-school): This program teaches students entirely or primarily online or through the Internet. It has been defined as "education that uses one or more technologies to deliver instruction to students who are separated from the instructor and to support regular and substantive interaction between the students.”
Quality Neighborhood Schools: All District 11 neighborhood schools will commit to equitable opportunities for all learners by using the Colorado 2020 Standards in all core subject areas, research based instructional strategies, the same equitable academic opportunities, curriculum which follows grade-by-grade content, concepts and skill building blocks much like spiraling curriculum models, with fidelity of treatment, and computer and technology skills.
Schools of Innovation: Schools applying for innovation status will leverage a design and implementation process that creates a community school model based on the personalized needs of their students, educators, and families and utilizes partnerships with community members, local businesses, and philanthropic organizations dedicated to student and community success within and beyond the school experience.
STEM: The entire school’s focus is on STEM and every student participates in a curriculum of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. A STEM program within a larger school: Some schools create STEM academies within their schools that allow interested students to study STEM in more depth.
