The following activities are effective ways to support reading skills at home. Try them out and check out the links for help.

K-2 Phonemic Awareness/Phonics
Beginning/End Sounds:
- Look for words on cereal boxes, magazines, books, movie boxes, etc. that begin or end with the letter _____.
- Think of and draw a picture of words that begin or end with the letter ____.
Rhyming:
- Read a Dr. Seuss book. See if you can find the words that rhyme.
- Recite Nursery Rhymes line by line. What are the rhyming words? See if you can memorize it.
ABC’s:
- Recite or sing the alphabet. Write as many letters of the alphabet you know in uppercase letters. Try it again with lowercase.
- Make alphabet flash cards and practice identifying what they are. Click here for help.

K-1 Fluency
- Have someone read a fiction story to you for 20 minutes.
- Have someone read a non-fiction story to you for 20 minutes.
- Read a decodable passage or a few pages from a story 3 times. See if you can increase speed and acuracy.
- Take turns reading a decodable story with an adult.

K-1 Comprehension
- Have someone read your favorite fiction book. Draw a picture of the characters.
- Have someone read a non-fiction book to you. Draw a picture about something you learned about. (Go to Pebble Go for great non-fiction text).
- Read 2 fiction stories. Compare and contrast the main characters of the story.
- Read a book of your choice. Tell an adult or older sibling what the story was about.
- Read a book of your choice. Think about a part of the story that made you feel happy. Draw a picture.
- Read a book with someone and take turns making predictions.
- Read a fiction story with someone and discuss the problem and solution.
- Read a story and have an adult ask you a question from here.

3-5 Phonics
6 Syllables:
- Find two or three syllable words in a passage or book and try to identify the syllable types. Go here for help.
Sound Spelling:
- Look for words on cereal boxes, magazines, books, movie boxes, etc. that have different sound spellings. Use this phonics chart to help.
Rhyming:
- Think of a one syllable word (Examples: crab, sit, hot). Write a list of words that rhyme with it.
Prefix/Suffix:
- As you read a book, passage, magazine, cereal box, etc. look for common prefixes and suffixes.

2-5 Fluency
- Read a fiction story for 20 minutes.
- Read a non-fiction story for 20 minutes.
- Whisper read a passage or story 2 times.
- Time yourself reading a passage or a few pages from a book 3 times aloud. See if you improve your speed and acuracy.

2-5 Comprehension
- Read your favorite fiction story. Write down how the character is similar or different from you?
- Read a non-fiction story. Write down two interesting facts you learned about.
- Read 2 fiction stories. Compare and contrast the main characters of the story.
- Read a book of your choice. Tell an adult or older sibling what the story was about.
- Read a book of your choice. Write about how the story made you feel and why.
- Read a book with someone and take turns making predictions.
- Read a story and answer a question from here.
- Read a non-fiction story and discuss the main idea and details.
- Read a fiction story and discuss the problem, events, and solution.
