I have had the privilege of teaching at Madison Elementary for the past nine years! I have taught 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 1st/2nd grade combo class. I transitioned into the Teacher Learning Coach position recently and love working with teachers, interventionists, and students at Madison. Together we ensure all students are receiving best first instruction in the classroom, as well as extension and remedial skills students may need at each grade level in reading and math.
Please access the assignments section on this page to view videos that can support early literacy and reading strategies. Research shows that students that become good readers have been taught how to break the code through explicit phonics instruction. Mapping sound spelling correspondance is essential to learning to read. Each child needs a different number of repetitions to master the code. Orthographic mapping occurs as the brain links letters to sounds. Once a child has successfully sounded out words they begin to go into their long term memory. The goal is for students to learn the difference between sound out words and sight words (words that can't be sounded out: said, from, does, etc.)
On this page you will find access to videos that highlight sound spelling cards we use at Madison, FRY word lists for students to read quickly to gain automaticity, and phonics (and syllable) videos for students to practice. There are also variations of these activities and skills to practice on the Madison website.
Please feel free to email me directly if you are lookig for more information and resources to support your student.
Thank you for your partnership in your child's education! :)
