    Best, First Instruction (BFI) in D11 is the Tier I Learning System for ALL students regardless of subject or grade. This system is the guarantee in all quality neighborhood schools to ensure equitable opportunity and access to excellent learning experiences.

    D11's Journey to a Coherent Tier I Learning System

    This system will guide all instructional decision-making processes beginning in the 21-22 school year, with full implementation in the 24-25 and 25-26 school years. See map below:

    BFI Consists of 4-pillars: 

    1. Build Relationships: BFI should deepen student agency through caring, positive, and authentic connections with peers and adults.
    2. Meet the Needs of All Students: BFI should include accessible, equitable, and flexible instruction to meet the changing needs of diverse student populations.
    3. Create Relevancy: BFI should engage students in authentic, meaningful, real-world, and engaging work.
    4. Foster Disciplinary Literacy: BFI should position students to work, think, talk, and plan as experts in the content would.

    When planning for Best First Instruction (BFI), the foundation requires educators to build meaningful relationships with all students, address individual needs, create relevancy by allowing students to see themselves in their learning, and provide opportunities for exploration and expression.  The educator also utilizes instructional materials and strategies that honor the diversity of their classroom.

    These are the basic elements of a high impact teaching and learning process. Planning high impact instruction means teachers develop accessible, equitable, and flexible learning opportunities to meet the changing needs of a diverse student population.

    Working within the four pillar framework, the process used for learning focused instruction is the 6-Phases of Learning Model. This full BFI Tier I Learning System has been designed and developed by D11 educators in partership with McRel International.
