bullet Whittier Elementary is believed to be the oldest school in continuous operation in southern Colorado. It is most likely the second or third oldest school in Colorado.
bullet The name dates back to 1897. However, it is the same school that was begun by Professor O.L. Matthews under the provisions of the First Territorial Legislature in Colorado City in 1862.
bullet It was first a temporary frame building. In 1873 it moved to the old Courthouse Building in Colorado City where it remained until 1901, when it took occupation of its current location on Kiowa Street.
bullet School District #11 has records that show Whittier principals dating back close to 1919. This was the year that District #11 took over District #1.
