WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY THEN In January, 1894, a bond election was held to build an eight-room, two story brick building to replace the Locke School, which was located in West Colorado Springs on Washington Avenue. (When this area was annexed to Colorado Springs, the address was changed to 924 West Pikes Peak Avenue.) The parents in that locale wanted to replace the small, cheap frame building with a brick edifice that would be similar to the elegant new brick schools in other parts of town. The $25,000 bond issue was passed, and the school was ready to open in the fall of 1895. At the dedication ceremony, many students, parents, townspeople, and school officials and even a marching band turned out for the occasion. The little house to the right of the original three story building was part of the school and used as a classroom. This little building is still standing and is used as a third grade classroom. The original three story school was razed in the summer of 1972.
