Core Knowledge Curriculum for Preschool

Oral Language

It is important to realize that the teaching of oral language skills are "within the context of learning opportunities, in the form of child-adult interactions and conversations, that present themselves continuously on a daily basis."

 

Goal - Understand and use language to think, organize and relate

          Match pictures of simple opposites big-little, cold-hot, full-empty, happy-said,

          open-close

Goal - Understand and use increasingly varied and complex vocabulary and syntax

          Combine simple sentence using and.  Use personal pronoun correctly, especially "I"

          when referring to oneself

 

Nursery Rhymes, Poems, Fingerplays

Goal - Develop memorization skills - Hush Little Baby, If you're happy and you know it,

          Pop goes the Weasel

Goal - While listening perform associated hand and body gestures

 

Storybook Reading and Telling

Goal - Develop a notion of "story schema".  Read/tell a story using a wordless picture book.

          Examples:  A Boy, A Dog, A Frog, Good Dog, Carl, Goodnight Gorilla

 

Emerging Literacy Skills in Reading and Writing

Goal - Develop an awareness of the structure of print.  Recognize the initial letter of his or

          her first name.

 

Mathematical Reasoning and Number Sense

Goal - Quantify groups of objects.  Name and match numerals 1-4 with corresponding

          Quantities.  Identify ordinal position for first and last.

 

Goal - Identify a one-dollar bill

 

Orientation in Space

Goal - Use simple maps of familiar environment.  On a simple map of a single room showing

          furniture arrangements, indicate his or her own position.  Identify a lake.

 

Scientific Reasoning

Goal - Use tools and objects to construct and create.  Cut - scissors - straight line

 

Music

Goal - Instrumental works.  Ponchielli "Dance of the Horns."

 

Visual Arts

Goal - Explore and create, using various art forms, media, techniques.  Use tools and

          techniques in completing art projects

 

Movement

Goal - Develop and refine eye-hand, eye-foot coordination skills.  Push or pull a heavy object.  Play hot potato.
