The District 11 standards for physical education are the basis for our program at Washington Elementary. Standard 1 - Students demonstrate skills in a variety of physical activities and sports. Skill development is key to the P.E. curriculum. We work at all grade levels on locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative skills as well as spatial awareness. We introduce skills and strategies in sports such as soccer, floor hockey, basketball, volleyball, and softball. We also work on individual sports such as gymnastics and track and field. Our primary students play cultural games and other lead-up games to practice skills.
Standard 2 - Students demonstrate knowledge in physical fitness. Physical fitness is woven into every day’s lesson as we talk about and work on muscle strength and flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, and the importance of making good health choices.
Standard 3 - Students participate in guided and self-directed lifelong activities. Our classes are structured so that students gain a variety of experiences. They work on skills individually in stations, with partners, or in a whole group game in order to increase their competence and encourage further exploration. We want to inspire a passion for moving and playing!
Standard 4 - Students demonstrate knowledge in team, dual, and individual sports. Good sportsmanship and teamwork are essential skills to learn as children are growing. Students at Washington will have a wide variety of opportunities in which to practice those interpersonal skills so that each person is treated with respect. Game rules and their origins are taught, and we discuss what types of influences cultures may have had on various games. Knowing the origin and the rules then allows students to demonstrate their abilities in the context of games.
Standard 5 - Students demonstrate the knowledge necessary to participate in physical activity. Safety is critical in P.E. Students learn the safe use of equipment and the safest ways to participate in an activity, all of which gives them a foundation for proper movement throughout their lives. They also have many opportunities to learn life-skills as they share equipment and work cooperatively with their classmates.
Standard 6 - Students recognize the role of physical activity and the effect it has on their social, emotional, mental, and physical development.
Through their experiences in the physical education program, students will be better equipped to maintain health in all areas of their lives. They learn self-respect and respect for others, and practice cooperative learning through play.
