Kindergarten
students entering 1st grade should know the following:

how
to neatly print their complete first and last name |
 |
how
to recognize and count numbers, in sequence, from 1-15 |
 |
how
to write, in order, numbers 1-15 |
 |
know
their name, address, and telephone number by heart |
 |
recognize
and be able to name upper and lower case letters of the alphabet |
 |
recognize
that the print in a book is read from left to right and top to bottom |
 |
be
able to recognize and say the following sight words |
I, a, is, go, no ,can, the to, in it, on, you and at, an, we,
my, if, see, not, be, up, so, he, by, will, as, this, was, did
 |
track
words with their fingers when they are listening to a familiar story |
 |
be
able to retell a simple story, beginning, middle and end |
 |
be
ready and able to sit in a desk and focus on a teacher for a short period of
time |
If
your child has these basics mastered, they will really be able to progress
quickly in the 1st grade where they will learn to:

sound
out new words using the sounds of the letters they have learned |

use
clues from the pictures in the stories they are reading to understand and
comprehend what their new stories are about |
 |
learn
how to read for pleasure |
 |
learn
that different books give us different information |
 |
use
computers to learn new things |
 |
learn
how to write using proper punctuation and grammar |
 |
learn
how writing will help us communicate with others |
 |
learn
how exciting math can be and how it relates to our lives every day |

learn
about science and how our world works |
 |
learn
about history and how other people live, where they live, and what their
lives are like |

they
will learn about globes and maps and what they can tell us |
 |
and
most of all, they will learn how all this makes our classroom, community,
and world seem a lot more interesting |
