The purpose of a school activity route is to provide transportation support for before / after school activities for those students who are eligible for bus transportation services.  These routes are not designed to provide transportation for students who miss regular education bus routes due to student detention after school.  

Requirements to Establish Routes

Routes will be designed when requested by the school principal / assistant principal.  Requests for an activity route will be submitted no later than two weeks prior to the requirement for the route.  Monthly schedules are preferred.  Activity routes will only be driven when eight (8) or more students will be using the service.  When there will not be at least eight riders, the principal / assistant principal should cancel the requirement.  Routes will be monitored by the Transportation Department and cancelled if ridership is less than eight students.

An adult from the school, or individual responsible for the activity will be present at the school bus when students board the bus.  This individual will present a list containing the names of students who are authorized transportation services on the activity route.  This list will provide the student’s name and home phone number so parents can be contacted in the event of an accident or emergency.  An individual pass is acceptable if completed, legible and signed and dated by a school official.

Students will be dropped at the closest D-11 school or property / regular bus stop.  When adverse weather conditions exist students will be delivered as close to their homes as possible.  This will be at the driver’s discretion. 

Coordination / Cancellation of Activity Routes

Only one individual from each school site shall be the Point of Contact (POC) for the coordination and cancellation of Activity Routes.  If the POC cancels the activity route, announcements should be made to all students and teachers to ensure that all are aware of the cancellation.  The POC will keep the Transportation Operations Manager informed of support requirements at least two weeks in advance and any requested changes.

Conduct on Activity Routes

Transportation services for students who fail to comply with Bus Safety Rules on activity routes will be terminated.
