Department Overview

General
Colorado Springs School District 11 provides pupil
transportation services for approximately 25% of its student population. Of the
7,200 students eligible for transportation, approximately 5,400 utilize the
service each day, to and from school. Approximately 525 of these students are
provided special needs transportation as a related service in support of their
individualized education plan (IEP).
Personnel
The department consists of 147 personnel: 120 drivers, 4
bus assistants, 10 mechanics / fleet maintenance personnel and 13 operations,
training, safety, technology, administration and operations support personnel.
Operations
Each of the District’s 95 – 100 daily bus routes
serve two to three school sites every morning and afternoon. Approximately 25
noon routes provide mid-day special needs services. Field trip support is
provided for classes and the District’s athletic program before, after and
in-between morning and afternoon routes. The school bus fleet logs approximately
1,360,000 miles per year; 1,170,000 miles for route support and 190,000 miles
for field trip support.
Maintenance
The department’s maintenance section provides
maintenance support for 120 buses, approximately 160 district support
vehicles/major pieces of equipment and over 500 pieces of small engine
equipment. In addition, contract maintenance is provided to other local school
districts.
