Transportation Eligibility
Overview / Policy
General
The District's transportation program is designed to transport students who
live an unreasonable walking distance from their designated school or school
assigned by boundary, to school and back in an efficient, safe and economical
manner.
Passengers
Only those students who are authorized transportation services will be
permitted to board and ride the bus. Principals, other administrators and
teachers designated by the principal to assist with student management will be
allowed to ride the bus. Parents are not authorized to board the bus or
ride as a passenger unless they are approved chaperons for field trips or have
prior approval from the school principal and the Director of
Transportation.
Walkers and Riders
The District furnishes transportation to all students to their assigned
school in accordance with the transportation boundaries established by the Board
of Education. The established walking areas generally fall into the
following radii from schools:
Elementary - 1.25 to 1.5 miles
Middle - 1.5 to 2.0 miles
High School - 2.0 to 2.5 miles
Transportation shall be furnished for shorter distances if, in the opinion of
the Superintendent or designee, extreme hardship or dangerous conditions
prevail. The Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) is the forum for
reviewing walking and bus transported areas.
Because attendance is not required and because of the half-day program,
kindergarten students are eligible for school bus service only one way on a
space-available basis. Exceptions to this are approved by the Board of
Education. Current exceptions include: Students living within the District’s
boundaries east of Powers Blvd. and those students living south of Platte Avenue
in the Longfellow Elementary School detached attendance area. Students
enrolled in full day kindergarten programs are eligible for school bus service
to and from school on a space-available basis.

The District uses a Transportation Service Index (TSI) as a tool to aid in
determining transported areas
Choice and Voluntary Permit Students
The District does not provide transportation services for
students granted permission to attend school outside their attendance area
(permit students). Transportation is the responsibility of the parent.

Route Design and Changes
In establishing bus routes, an attempt will be made to establish the route so
that it will not be more than one-half mile from the residence of the students
who do not live on the route. In no event shall students be required to
walk more than one-half mile to a bus stop.
Routes will be continuously evaluated during the school year to ensure
maximum ridership. As such, some routes may be redesigned or combined
during the school year. When this occurs, the school, parents and students
will be notified prior to implementation.
Drivers are to make no changes whatsoever in routes or receiving and
discharging points except in cases where road conditions require an immediate
decision and such changes are absolutely required. When such conditions
prevail, safety of the students is to be the governing factor. Drivers
report such conditions to the transportation supervisor as soon as possible.
School Bus Route Times
Stop times are the time of departure from the stop. Students should be
at the stop at least 5 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time. Time
will be based on the Naval Observatory Master Clock (phone 567-6742 or on the
WEB at
http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/cgi-bin/timer.pl.
Departure times from schools will be published and adhered to. Students
should be on the bus at least 1 minute prior to departure and
should not loiter outside the bus, waiting for the departure time. If
buses depart on time, they shall not be called back to the school for students
who miss the bus. Once the driver has closed the door and the buses start
to move they will not stop to allow students to board. Students
should not run after the bus as it departs. Route times for delivering
students are approximate arrival times at bus stops.
