WHAT IS READING COUNTS?

Generally the 2nd-5th grade Trailblazer students use The Scholastic Reading Counts program.

The students begin by taking a Scholastic Reading Inventory assessment to get a Lexile Level.  Lexile Levels are numerical range guidelines to assist the student to read at a level that is not too easy and not too hard.  Scholastic has assigned lexile levels to books to target reading levels that allow the student to comprehend what they read while building vocabulary.  Students improve by reading words in context and responding to text during the computerized tests.

Each teacher is in charge of their classroom expectations, please consult them with specific questions. The following general guidelines will help you be successful with the Reading Counts program:

  • Lexile levels are a range, selecting books 50-80 points above or below the students' tested level is acceptable
  • If a student is scoring 7-9 out of 10 on every test, they are in the correct targeted reading level
  • If a student scores a 10 out of 10 on every test, the lexile level is too easy, increase the book of choice up 20-50 lexile points
  • If a student scores a 6 or less out of 10 on every test, the books are too challenging, decrease the lexile by 20-50 lexile points
  • The difficulty of a book is not only determined by the length of the text, but also by the vocabulary and concepts in the book (A thin book is not necessarily too easy)
  • Nonfiction books tend to have higher lexile levels
