"History of E.O.C."

E.O.C. (Educational Opportunity Center) originally started as "The Teen   Center."  Located in  Old Colorado City in the Goodwill building it wasn't a very recognizable program.  Starting with only four teachers who facilitated around fifty students.  The original attendance scheme was by appointment.  Students would come in for fifteen minutes or so to correct and review their homework.  The "points" system has remained the same, 100 points = 1 credit.  The Teen Center was looked down on from the beginning because of the radical change in "the system."  Seemingly anything different from how it has been done for many years is the wrong or incorrect way.  The Teen Center received almost no District funding and wasn't taken very seriously.

After two years, The Teen Center was promoted and moved into an old, shut down elementary school.  A few more teachers joined the staff and about fifty more students joined the roll.  In this time period The Teen Center started structured classes in which students could attend.  Students still had the choice of appointments.  Because of the structured classes The Teen Center was taken more seriously.

In 1999, The Teen Center, became the Nikola Tesla Educational Opportunity Center and moved into a brand new building.  There is a  Parenting Program which is located on the lower floor.  E.O.C. now is very structured.  Tesla has a counselor, and at least one teacher for each subject.

Classes can still be completed by appointment but  isn't a very popular choice among the students.  The students are here to learn and make something of themselves.  While E.O.C. is still looked down upon by the general population, it is only because they are unaware of the program and the caring people it is run by.  Nikola Tesla Education Center now has twenty teachers, four administrators, and is approaching two-hundred plus students. Although classified as an "alternative" middle and high school, we don't lose many students to "traditional"
