New ITI-Lifeskills Class!
Formerly known as the
Building Responsible Citizens
Class, the new
ITI Life Skills
class integrates, through creative expression, the Life Skills and
Lifelong Guidelines of the ITI curriculum implemented at Stratton
Elementary School. Some of the Life Skills that we are working with
currently include caring, responsibility, integrity and initiative. Two
of the principles of the ITI program include the idea that
movement enhances learning,
and that emotion
is the gatekeeper to learning and performance.
In the Life Skills class we use movement, dance and art as our vehicle,
as students build relationship to themselves and with each other. We
have done things such as dancing with a focus on our bodies, tracing our
bodies on paper and talking about different ways to keep our bodies
healthy. We have embodied, through movement and water color art process,
the different primary emotions. We have also learned skills to
experience and feel
our feelings, rather than just
think
about them. One of the ways we have done this is to liken our bodies to
trees. The children plant their roots (feet) on the ground and make
their trunks (legs) solid, as they learn to feel safe with the many
emotions that they experience. You can help facilitate this at home, as
well! I welcome your thoughts or feedback throughout the school year.
The emotional lives of our students is
very important to me. I look forward to working with the students of
Stratton, to assist them in feeling safe in their emotional lives. This
will only continue to enhance and support their learning in the
classroom. Thank you.
