Meet Sweaty Betty!
|
We
are Star-Mathing kids and doing lots of ‘differentiated’
education. We incorporate architecture as art, and do half sized
self portraits, (because math is an art) and we do rescues
involving math procedures. It may sound crazy, but you'd never
believe how much math is really needed to rescue someone! We make
candy using recipe adaptations involving fractions. (The kids
really enjoy it.) Anything else is just math and worksheets and
there's nothing exciting about that!!! |

Star Math?
Star Math is a program, that we have at Spring Creek, that helps
us teachers to figure out where the students are in their
educational highway to success. It helps us be able to give the
students the work they really need and not something too easy or
too hard. The students are also able to work at their own pace
therefore they tend to get a lot accomplished.
|
What's with the
architecture? In a way, math can be a hidden or forgotten art
form. One really fun way to get comfortable with how to use the
math tools (i.e. rulers and compasses.) was to create a
dream house and draw it. The students needed to use all the
mathematical tools to make anything in their picture.
Self Portraits? Only half
sized though. we measure how tall the kids are and everything
else, then we divide that by half and draw it! They are really
cool.

Rescues with math...
You're kidding... Right? No, we're not kidding.
Believe it or not, rescuing people does take a lot of math. What
happens if you need a latter to save someone from a burning
building and the building is 45 feet tall, but you only have a
latter that's 32 feet long. how many more feet would you need?
See! I could've just saved someone's life.

Making Candy in
Jail? The kids seem to love trying to figure out
how much powered sugar is need to make the wedding mints. It be
messy at times, but it's totally worth it because not only do they
get the treat that they deserve, but they're learning also! |
