Ms. Cary
"Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts."  -Winston Churchill

Ms. Cary teaches Language Arts, G.E.D. Preparatory Class and Journalism.  She is dedicated to her students, works hard, and goes above and beyond with the ways she motivates us.  The following is some of the things that we do in Ms. Cary's classes:

Language Arts

Journalism and G.E.D. Prep.

Language Arts class with Ms. Cary is filled with diversification and tons of different subjects.  Some examples would include:
  • Studies on Hispanic Heritage Month: Talked about Cesar Chavez and wrote their very own corridos on www.corridos.org.
  • Poetry Unit: Recited poems from famous poets that were found on www.poetryoutloud.org and had a poetry writing contest.
  • Students also take Star Reading quizes to determine their reading grade level.
  • New to Spring Creek this year is the Accelerated Reader (A.R.) program where students read books, log onto A.R. and take a quiz on the book.  Each book is worth a certain amount of points, and the students earn the points from passing the quizzes then are able to use their points to 'buy' prizes.  Some prizes available are: Books, Stationary, Envelopes and Candy (Jolly Ranchers to be exact).
  • Great Depression Unit: Students read Bud Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis and did activities surrounding the book and other Great Depression issues.
  • Genocide Unit: Students watched Hotel Rwanda and Freedom Writers and read the book Night by Elie Wiesel.  Students also logged onto this website to study the Holocaust.

Some other literature that the students have read interactively in class have been: The Telltale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe and The Crucible by Arthur Miller.

In Journalism class, the students work on Spring Creek's very own quarterly newsletter.  Examples of some things that go into the newsletter would be:
  • Some of the staff's favorite recipes
  • Interviews with various people in our school
  • Articles of interest for the students
  • Surveys
  • Book and Movie Reviews
  • Current Events

The students also study out of a Journalism textbook to gain more skills in the art of Journalism.

In her G.E.D. Prep. classes, the students work independently at their own pace.  Students who successfully complete their G.E.D. are awarded a party in their honor with cake, ice cream, chips and soda.  The students may request the kind of cake, soda, chips and ice cream they want.  The pictures below were taken from the most recent G.E.D. party.  The one on the far right shows Ms. Cary cutting and serving the cake:
