Sabin student, CODY SMITH, has been selected to take part in a truly historic occasion—the Inauguration of the 44th President of the United States!!!

From January 17 through 21, 2009, Cody will take part in what is the most historic and celebrated event to occur in our nation and which is the hallmark of our democratic government—the peaceful transfer of power to our newly elected president.  While the entire world watches the President of the United States take the formal oath of office on television, Cody will be among the privileged few who experience this momentous occasion in person!

As an Inaugural Scholar and special guest on the National Mall, Cody will not only bear witness as the President of the United States is sworn into office, he also will meet a major presidential candidate, White House officials, congressional staff, political experts and special VIPs such as Lance Armstrong, James Carville and Marlee Matalin.  Following the inauguration, Cody will experience the sights and sounds of a jubilant nation during the inaugural parade and even attend a Black Tie Gala Inaugural Ball.  Attending the conference also represents an excellent opportunity to explore the many cultural and historic sites that only our nation’s capital can offer.

Cody has been awarded this special opportunity due to his scholarly achievements as an alumnus of both the Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC) and the Junior National Young Leaders Conference Alumni Boston (JrNYLC Alumni Boston).  At the conference, Cody will be honored as a distinguished young leader and accomplished student.

Congratulations to the following talented artists:

Chelsea Emerson
Summer Poe
Justine Ruppert
Megan Lane
Garrison Kretschmann
Brianne Leatherman
Cameron Schlumpf

These outstanding students have been chosen to represent Sabin at the citywide Young People’s Art Exhibition at the Imagination Celebration Place in the Citadel Mall. Stop by and take a look if you happen to be at the Citadel. Be prepared to be amazed at the talent of our own Sabin students!
Congratulations!

Vocal Music

Several Sabin vocalists participated in the Pikes Peak Area Solo/Ensemble Festival at Wasson High School on Saturday, March 1st.  Each of the students did an outstanding job and represented Sabin very well.

Chase Webb received a Division II (Excellent) rating.  Soloists receiving a

Division I (Superior) rating were:  Elijah Anding, Ashley Crance, Kara Cumpston, Janae Dickens, Matt DuBois, Allie Duensing, Haylee Ehrlich, Brittany Fahrenbrink, Haliegh Gray, Garrison Kretschmann, Edie Laird, Samantha Luick, Andrea Marcolongo, Macy Myers, Anjela Peterson, Marina Scholtz, and D’ahnya Trainer

The rating system is based on a scale from a Division I being the best, down to a Division V, needing the most improvement.

The Sabin Middle School 7th & 8th Grade Chamber choir participated in the Pikes Peak Area Large Group Festival on April 15th, at Mitchell High School.  Choirs are rated by 3 judges on a scale of I (Superior) to V (Unprepared).  The Chamber choir earned a Division I rating for the third consecutive year.  This is truly an outstanding achievement.

MESA CLUB

The Sabin Middle School MESA club came in third overall in the middle school division of the CSU-Pueblo Engineering, Science & Technology Design Contest.  Special notice should go to Sabin 8th graders Andrea Marcolongo and Stephanie Fields for coming in second in the Say It, Do It challenge.

Congratulations!!!!

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

The Sabin Science Olympiad team qualified to go to the state competition for the first time and it was quite the experience.  It took place on Saturday, April 12th in Golden at the Colorado School of Mines college campus.  Our team of twelve students worked hard to prepare and gave it their best.

The top performers were Nicholas Masching and Marcus Brown in the “Balloon Launch Glider” competition.  They received a bronze medal for taking 3rd overall in the state.  Very impressive!!  Mrs. Meredith and Mr. Cruz would like to congratulate all the team members.

Sabin Science Competitions

In February and March, teams comprised of students from Mrs. Di Censo’s science classes competed against each other and tested their knowledge on science.  The winning team members from the February competition were Breanne McGregor, Zach Poston, Austin Williams, and Dante Hogan.  The winning team members in March were Abbey Rettinger, Juan Tarango, and Brianne Leatherman.

Solar Car Competition

On May 10th, Sabin will be competing in the NREL Solar Car Race in Littleton, Colorado.  We have two teams for this competition.  Team One is composed of Marcus Brown, Cameron Schlumpf, and Cole Catt.  The members of Sabin Too are Matt DuBois, Abby Coe, and Chase Webb.  This is our third year competing.  We won in the previous two years.  Let’s go Saints!

Orchestra

The 6th-8th grade orchestra classes have had an exciting and successful year.  Not only did several of our orchestra students audition and qualify for Honor’s Orchestra, we had over seventeen entries to ‘Solos and Ensembles’ representing students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade orchestra classes, with fourteen entries receiving a ‘Superior’ rating and three receiving an ‘Excellent’ rating.  In short, all of Sabin Middle School orchestra students who participated in this event received either a medal or certificate of honor.  Furthermore, the 8th grade orchestra, with the help of our 6th grade bass player, competed in the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) ‘Large Group’ festival and received three ‘Superior’ ratings which is the highest rating that can be awarded to a school. Sabin will receive an engraved plaque for this hard-working group of students’ efforts.

Juan Tarango is headed for the Colorado State Geography Bee, which will be held on Friday, April 4, 2008.

Each 6th and 7th grade team chose four team winners and 8th grade social studies teachers chose a total of ten students to compete at the Sabin's School-wide Geography Bee.  Juan was our school winner and had to complete a rigorous written test to qualify for the state competition.  Only 100 students qualified for the Colorado State Geography Bee

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD T-SHIRT DESIGN

Congratulations to Cameron Schlumpf, an 8th grader at Sabin Middle School.  Cameron is the winner of a state wide competition to design the official T-shirt for the 2008 Science Olympiad tournaments this year.  The winning school, Sabin, will be awarded with 15 participants and 2 coaches T-shirts.  The designer, Cameron, will be presented a $50 check at the regional competition held on March 8th at UCCS.  All schools will be encouraged to purchase this T-shirt as the proceeds make it possible to purchase and present supervisor T-shirts to all Science Olympiad volunteers.

Team coaches Mrs. Meredith and Mr. Cruz and the whole Sabin Science Olympiad team are very proud to represent the state in this manner.  Good job, Cameron!

Saintly Singers

Thirteen of our Sabin Middle School Chamber Choir students were selected, via a taped audition, to be a part of the 2007-08 District 11 Middle School Honor Choir.  These students are preparing a set of music to be presented in concert at Doherty High School Tuesday, November 13th, at 7:00 p.m.  They will also present concerts at several of the District 11 middle schools on Wednesday, November 14th.  Approximately 250 tapes were submitted by choir students throughout District 11 middle schools, with only 80 being selected.  Thus, this is truly an outstanding honor for the following students.  8th Graders accepted include Khadijah Baker, Ashley Crance, Matt DuBois, Allie Duensing, Haylee Ehrlich, Garrett Koontz, Garrison Kretschmann, Edie Laird, and Takarra Rigney.  7th Graders selected for the choir were Elijah Anding, Kimber Forst, Haliegh Gray, and Chase Webb.  Congratulations!
