Rick French Fund

Who was Rick French? Rick was a social studies teacher and coach here at Sabin from the mid 1980’s until his death on April 28, 1996. He taught primarily 7th grade geography and 8th grade U.S. History. He coached boy’s basketball, boy’s and girl’s track, and even helped sponsor the golf team on occasion. Rick was respected by his peers and well liked by students. Rick was the type of person who would look out for others, particularly students here at Sabin. If a student could not pay for their sports physical or sports fee Rick was known to pay for them. If track athlete could not afford spikes, Rick might have purchased them. He did things like this that often went unnoticed or unknown because Rick was also private and humble. When Rick died a fund was set up here at Sabin to continue the benevolence that Rick demonstrated. For the past 11 years the Rick French Fund has helped students here at Sabin.

Rick may not have agreed with all of the practices that are now current in education, but one thing he would still agree with is the need to help students. As the needs of Sabin’s students have evolved so has the usage of the Rick French Fund. Initially the fund was set up to help students in the athletic arena however the usage of the fund has evolved. Currently the fund helps not only in with athletics, but also with field trip fees or with student supplies for classroom use.
