A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS!!

One reason that Sabin is such an outstanding school is due to our huge volunteer corps of parents who can be seen throughout the school fulfilling all kinds of important roles.  The staff at Sabin would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who volunteered at Sabin this year (whether it be in the office, library, or driving on field trips and sporting events), as well as those who offered to volunteer.  Sabin had such a tremendous response to our request for volunteers at the beginning of the school year that we may not have been able to contact all of you.  Just knowing that parents, grandparents, and guardians are available is a very nice feeling.   We cannot thank you enough for all you do!

CONGRATULATIONS

2008 Crystal Apple Award Winner—Mr. Michael Butler!

The Crystal Apple Awards Committee and Sabin Middle School are pleased to announce that Michael Butler (8th Grade Social Studies Teacher) is this year’s Crystal Apple Award Winner.  Mr. Butler will be honored on National Teacher Appreciation Day, May 6th, at a formal banquet at the Colorado Springs Sheraton.  The Crystal Apple Awards is a program sponsored by the El Paso County PTA and  School District 11 to recognize teacher excellence.  Mr. Butler will receive $500.00 to be used in the classroom.

GREAT JOB MR. BUTLER!!!

Talent Show 2008 Is Right Around the Corner!

It’s almost Talent Show time!  This year we will have a school show (without judges) to be held at Sabin on Tuesday, May 6th, starting at 2:10 p.m., plus an evening performance (with judges) to be held at Doherty High School’s auditorium at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7th.  A record 66 students are involved this year, including performers and backstage crew!  Seventeen acts will strut their stuff, from singing and dancing to martial arts and comedy.  It should be a fantastic show, and all parents, students, staff and community members are cordially invited to attend the evening show at Doherty High School on May 7th.

See you there!

Golfing at Sabin!

The Sabin P. E. Dept. would like say thanks to all of the people that donated clubs and golf balls to our school’s intramural/physical education golf program we are getting off the ground. We are off to a great start! We currently have enough woods and nine irons for every student to have one during each period.

We are still in need of golf balls and more putters if anyone comes across any more……..just drop them off at the office.

Thank you very much………Mr. Walker

Also, all music from the entire year is to be turned in to Ms. Quail no later than May 21st (after continuum).

We have had a fantastic year and it has been my distinct pleasure to get to know your students. Our goal for next year includes more activities, more students, and more music!!! Also, a summer band program is currently in the works to provide your students with an opportunity to continue improving while the summer flashes before our eyes (helps for those chair challenges in the beginning of the year!!!).

WANTED NEW/USED/OLD

GOLF CLUBS NEEDED FOR SABIIN’S P.E./INTRAMURAL PROGRAM!!!!

If anyone is doing any winter cleaning over the holidays and would like to donate used golf clubs to Sabin, we would greatly appreciate it. We are trying to get a golf program going here at Sabin, but getting enough clubs can be very expensive. We are looking for nine irons, wedges, and putters, but any type of club would be welcomed.
We are hoping to teach golf during the last half of the year as a part of our physical education program. During the last quarter we will offer it as an intramural activity and possibly even have a Sabin golf team that will compete against other schools.

Thank you, Mr. Walker and Mrs. Rice

Sabin Middle School scored 100% by the El Paso County Health Department!

On their recent Food Establishment Inspection Report, this site scored 100%!!!  Congratulations to Janice O’ Donnell, Linda Lee Davis, Sheila Blackmore, Sue Hawkins, Kristin Lange, Marie Copper, and Paula Clever for their excellence in Food Safety.  "Maintain Safe Food and Safe Environment for All Customers and Staff” is a primary goal and part of the mission of the Food & Nutrition Services strategic plan.

CSAP testing will be held March 10-21, 2008 with make up testing March 31-April 4.  We are excited to see the progress our Sabin students have made this year and are certain they are ready for the challenge.   We encourage all students to be in school during this time, and, if you do have appointments, please arrange them around our testing dates.  If you do have an appointment or your child will miss school anytime during the testing window, please contact our office so we can make arrangements. Students should be prepared at home by getting a full night sleep and eating a healthy breakfast each morning.

Please contact Ms. Sebben at 328-7007 if you have someone to nominate.

 Flu season is here

Medical providers now encourage parents to seek flu immunizations for themselves and their children over six months of age.  The flu shot, combined with frequent handwashing, is the first line of defense against illness in schools.

Already the office is reporting the presence of students with persistent coughs and colds.  This presents the necessity of a reminder that no remedies can be given at school without a physician’s order.  The rule covers even what might seem to be safest over the counter products such as cough drops, cough medicine, or analgesics.  Medication permission forms are available in the office to be signed by the physician if a parent wishes any medicine to be given at school.  Additionally, the product must be sent in a pharmacy labeled container for prescription drugs or, if an over the counter medication is authorized, it must come to school in a new, sealed container.  While these guidelines may seem extreme, they are for the protection of our students. No one, no matter how well intentioned, may take it upon themselves to medicate children in our school.

The District 11 School Nurse Consultants offer guidelines regarding illness in the schools and efforts to minimize communicable diseases.  These guidelines are intended to help parents determine whether or not their child should attend school.

Students with cold symptoms should not attend school.  Symptoms include:

¨ a constant runny nose with abnormal color or consistent nasal or lung congestion

¨ coughing that is constant or persistent

¨ recurrent sneezing that is not allergy related

Please do not send your child to school with an abnormal temperature—any fever over 100 degrees F.  Symptoms to watch for might include flushed face, chills, paleness or skin abnormally warm to touch.  One or all of these symptoms might be present.  A child with a temperature needs to stay home for at least 24 hours.  Remember, if you reduce your child’s temperature with medications such as Tylenol, your child is still ill.  Please do not medicate your student and bring them to school.  Additionally, please do not send a child to school who has been vomiting or had episodes of diarrhea within the last twelve hours.

At home, please reinforce good hand washing habits and using a tissue or elbow to cover coughs and sneezes.  Children need to be healthy and at school to learn.  Please observe these guidelines to help us foster wellness at Sabin.

NJHS Winter News

Tis the season for giving! NJHS members lived up to the idea well before and long past the season ended.

Back in October, Trick or Treat for UNICEF resulted in a donation of $470 to the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund. A huge effort to say thank you to deployed US troops followed in November. Banners, cards, photographs and letters were boxed up and sent to Special Tactics units in Iraq. If all goes well, everything should have arrived well before Christmas.

December was full of fun, and useful projects. This included our annual holiday party, a Giving Tree for Life Support Charities, and C.A.R.E. sales to raise money for holiday food baskets for families in our Sabin community. Life Support is a local charity that assists families with infants and young children.  Each NJHS student took gift tags from the tree that indicated needed items. They then earned the money and shopped for their donation. A representative group delivered everything on December 11. There was everything from cases of baby food to toys, formula, sleepers and stuffed animals. What a great feeling it was to know that we were able to make some families’ Christmases a little brighter. Our CARE sales, which were any snacks and baked goods that started with the letter C, A, R or E, raised $132. This money went towards the purchases needed for food baskets that were distributed to a number of needy families here at Sabin.

If the generous hearts and compassionate spirits of these young people are an example of what’s to come, I have to say that our futures are in good hands.

Computer This......news from Mrs. West

In eighth grade, students started their own businesses.  They named their company, designed a logo, produced a business card, and created a website. Marisa Inzinna and Brandee Castillo did an outstanding job creating their businesses, Buyaband and Stellar Cosmetics.  Next, students will be working on their tabloid newspapers where they change a picture in Adobe Photoshop and write an accompanying article.  Maybe this is how “The National Enquirer” got started!

Seventh graders have been working in Excel constructing spreadsheets, using formulas, sorting data, and creating graphs.  Nick Brier is excellent at Excel, earning 100% on his quiz.  Way to Go, Nick!  Next, students will begin working on their multimedia games that are essentially a “choose your own plot” story.  They will be illustrating, writing, and producing their own sounds and animations.  I can hardly wait to see their finished products!

Sixth graders have been working diligently on their keyboarding skills everyday.  Many students have reached the goal of 20 words per minute, while others are extremely close and will probably achieve the goal by the end of the quarter.

The window for permits opens November 1st and closes February 1st.  Permits can be picked up at any D-11 school.  If you have questions, call Kathy Rasdall @ 328-7006.    District Permit Information and Forms

Does Your Child Carry a Cell Phone?

If the answer to this question is yes, you must be aware of our school policy.  We welcome students to bring their  cell phones or pagers to school. It is a convenient and practical way to stay in contact with      your child before and after school hours.  However . . .

* All cell phones must be turned off and stored in your child’s locker during the school day.

* If your child is seen with his/her cell during the school day, it will be confiscated and turned into the security office.  If cell phone use during the school day is a reoccurring problem, you may be asked to come to the school to pick up the cell phone yourself.

* Parents may contact their children through the front office during regular school hours for emergencies at 328-7000.

* Sabin Middle School is not responsible for the theft, loss, or damage to any electronic devices.

HELP US RECRUIT!!

If you know of a super kid who would not only be a great assistance to a struggling student, but would also benefit from the responsibility of working with either a severe needs student or an academically challenged regular education student, SEND THEM OUR WAY.  Applications to become a student tutor are located in the Counseling

Office… (requires a written recommendation from a teacher, a parent, and a friend). Thanks so much,

Parent Connect Helpful Hints

If you are currently using Parent Connect to stay updated on how your children are doing in school, here are a few helpful pointers to keep in mind:

¨ The purpose of Parent Connect is to serve as a tool to “connect” and open the communication between parents and their children, as well as parents to teachers and teachers to students.

¨ Once accessing information on Parent Connect, use it to open dialogue between you and your child.  For instance, “What did you do for this assignment?” “Why do you have a missing assignment in math?” etc.

¨ Parent Connect is a flexible document that is constantly changing.  If your child has a poor grade in a class, it very well may look different within a couple of hours as teachers update their grades.  Do not assume the grades you see are set in stone.

¨ When you look at your child’s “Marks”, they will look different then their grades under “Assignments”.  The students’ “Marks” reflect the grades given on quarterly progress reports and report cards.

¨ When looking at your children’s assignments, be sure to click in Show all Assignments in the upper left hand corner.

¨ Remember, we also want your children to be great successes at school!  It is our hope that Parent Connect will be a tool your family uses to bring you closer to your children and what they are learning at school.

If you are not logged onto Parent Connect, please contact Andrea Reu for your personal log-in and password at 328-7015 or reual@d11.org or Kathy Rasdall at 328-7006/rasdaks@d11.org.

Sabin Vocal Music Department:

The choirs of Sabin recently completed the first concert of the 2007-08 school year on October 9th.  Performing were the 6th Grade Choir, 7th Grade Intermediate Choir, and the Sabin Middle School Chamber Choir.  Thanks to the students for their hard work in the first quarter, and for an exemplary performance to showcase their efforts!

Thirteen of our Sabin Middle School Chamber Choir students were selected, via a taped audition, to be a part of the 2007-08 District 11 Middle School Honor Choir.  These students are preparing a set of music to be presented in concert at Doherty High School Tuesday, November 13th, at 7:00 p.m.  They will also present concerts at several of the District 11 middle schools on Wednesday, November 14th.  Approximately 250 tapes were submitted by choir students throughout District 11 middle schools, with only 80 being selected.  Thus, this is truly an outstanding honor for the following students.  8th Graders accepted include Khadijah Baker, Ashley Crance, Matt DuBois, Allie Duensing, Haylee Ehrlich, Garrett Koontz, Garrison Kretschmann, Edie Laird, and Takarra Rigney.  7th Graders selected for the choir were Elijah Anding, Kimber Forst, Haliegh Gray, and Chase Webb.  Congratulations!

The next choir concert will be on Tuesday, December 18th.  We hope to see you there!

Shelter-In-Place

Our country has experienced many school tragedies/disasters in the last decade.  As the times are changing, our schools need to be more prepared than ever in case such crises should occur to one of us.

We assure you that Sabin Middle School has a very thorough crisis plan, including procedures for what we call “Shelter-in-Place”.   A Shelter-in-Place is designed to protect students and staff members from imminent danger inside the school.  All of our staff members have been trained and know the steps to follow if we are ever faced with a dangerous situation.

As parents, you need to know a couple things that will help keep you and your children safe.

During a Shelter-in-Place, you as parents are advised NOT to pick up your children.  This could increase the risk of danger for all involved.  If it is safe, campus security will supervise the front door to allow parent admittance for those parents who do come pick up their children.

Teachers and all other staff members will not release students directly to you.  For security purposes, all students must be checked out through the front office.   We need to be able to account for all of our students’ whereabouts.

Thank you for your help and understanding.

Welcome Back!

The Sabin Counseling Center is happy to welcome back Mrs. Marsha Peeler.  Mrs. Peeler is filling in for Mrs. Hilary Spartz, who is on maternity leave.  Mrs. Peeler will be helping out in the counseling center through the month of March.  Welcome back to the Sabin family, Mrs. Peeler.

Compute This....  News From Computer Literacy and Web Page Design

First quarter has come to an end, and students have practiced and improved their computer skills.

In eighth grade, students created several web sites, including an educational jeopardy game and a potato head website utilizing Adobe Elements and personification. They also used themes in FrontPage to created a biography website after researching a person and citing sources in MLA format.   The most entertaining project was creating original animated graphics. Cameron Schlumpf animated himself growing arms.  It is amazing!

In seventh grade, students created both bar, line, and circle graphs, researched an email that was a hoax, researched and created a timeline, located information on the Internet for a scavenger hunt as well as utilized Think.com for email and webpage creation.  Students also gave PowerPoint presentations after researching information and citing their sources in MLA format. The final project was designing their own “Choose Your Own Plot” games.   We have some very talented students at Sabin who can write and illustrate exciting tales.  You might check out Megan Lane’s project entitled “Evil Pac Attack” located on our website.

In sixth grade, students have been learning keyboarding skills and practicing everyday.  They also completed numerous assignments in Microsoft Word such as alphabetizing, formatting, bullets and numbering, and other essential skills Hopefully, they will continue to practice at home and in their new exploratory classes.

Parents must have a Parent Connect pin number and password to have access to their student’s information.  If you do not have a pin number or password, please call Ms. Reu at 328-7015 for further information or contact your child’s current school to get one set up today!

ATTENDANCE LINE--------------328-7035
Please call the 24-hour attendance line the same day your child is late or absent.

Changes Please contact the office when you have a change of telephone number, address, or contact person so that the current information is kept for emergency purposes.  You may inform our front office of these changes by note or by phone at 328-7000.  It is important that we keep all of our records current.  Thank you.

Medication Reminder

All students who need to take any kind of medication while at school must have a completed medication form signed by both parent and physician on file for each medication. This is true for prescription and non-prescription medications. If a student wishes to carry an inhaler or epi pen on his or her person an additional contract must be completed. Paper work must be completed each year. Prescription medications must come with the pharmacy label in place with the correct name and dose. Over the counter medications must come in the manufacture’s container with its original label. No medications in baggies or bottles with homemade labels are allowed on campus. This is a requirement of Colorado State Law.

Inclement Weather Delays/Closures: You can check for delays/closures on the D-11 Web site at www.d11.org and/or on Adelphia channel 16 and/or by calling 520-2000 or 520-2300 for a recorded message. You can sign up to receive an e-mail notification about delays and/or closures!  Go to www.d11.org  and click on D-11 Answers on the left side navigation bar, or click the question mark on the top right corner of your screen.   When you get into D-11 Answers, click on "My Account."  If you already have an account, log in; if not, create a new account.  Once logged in, you will see your “User Details.”  Under “Notification Groups,” click “EDIT.”  Enter your contact information and select which notifications you would like to receive.  Click “Submit” to save your changes.

TREE DONATIONS Sabin’s fantastic custodial crew would like to plant a tree every spring in honor of each 8th grade graduating class.  In order to do this, they would like to request can donations that they can turn into cash to purchase a “graduation” tree.  Please drop off your aluminum cans for recycling to help honor our graduating 8th graders and help the environment.

ALL-CALL COMMUNICATION is used at Sabin to contact parents concerning important information about upcoming events, schedule changes, or school closings.  Please remember that you must listen to the whole message or the machine will keep calling you back.  This system is a great way to help keep our parent/school communication strong.

The Labels for Education program is a great way to get FREE merchandise for our school.  With your help, Sabin Middle School can make this year the best ever.  Simply save labels  and send them to school.  Just drop your labels off at the media center in our special label collection bin. Thanks for your support!!

Zangle Student Connection! Students can now connect to Student Connect and view their grades and missing assignments for all classes that are visible.  They just need their student ID number and their network password.

Parent Connection by Telephone
District 11 provides a student information phone system for parents at 520-2300. The system provides up-to-date information on student attendance, assignments for secondary students, grades, schedules, standards and benchmarks for elementary students, school and classroom news. This information is an abbreviated version of what is available to District 11 parents through Parent Connection on the Internet. To access this student-information phone system, parents will use the same PIN and password assigned for access to Parent Connection on the Internet (PIN and password information are issued to parents by the school).
