National Junior Honors Society News (NJHS) President: Allison Wellborn Vice President: Abbey Rettinger Secretary: Lindsay Smith Treasurer: Katie Cardillo
The Sabin Middle School National Junior Honor Society was busy throughout March selling prize drawing tickets and pies. Our prize drawing and pie sales raised $345 which will be donated to the American Heart Association and the Sabin Rick French Student Assistance Fund. Among the prizes in our drawing was the opportunity to throw pies at a few of the staff members. We would like to thank the following staff for volunteering to be our pie targets.
Check out some of the fun in the pictures. More pictures can be seen on Sabin’s homepage. Invitations to apply for NJHS membership for the 2008-2009 school year have gone out already. Any current 6th or 7th grader with a 3.68 or higher GPA is eligible to submit an application. The due date to turn in your application is May 2nd. Towards the end of the year, we are planning a student target pie toss. This fundraiser will help the Children Against Land Mines (CHAMPS) project. There is still a lot to do before the year is over!
During February, we will be having a raffle for items and gift cards. The money earned will be donated to the American Heart Association. On March 14th we will have “Pi” sales in honor of Albert Einstein’s birthday and the number 3-14. All of the money raised from this fundraiser will be given to the Sabin Rick French Student Assistance Fund which gives financial assistance to Sabin students. Throughout April we will raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. We will also continue to work towards our goal of $8,000 to pay for a land mine rescue dog for CHAMPS (Children Against Land Mines). We would like to congratulate and recognize the following members for being nominated for the Colorado Youth Citizenship Award: April Shepard, Lindsay Smith, Cody Smith, Edie Laird, Brianne Leatherman, Andrea Marcolongo, and Tereasa Stipak. Congratulations to Geordon Waldman for attending the National Youth Leadership Conference in the fall of 2007, and to April Shepard for planning to attend the National Youth Leadership Conference in Denver this summer.
●During October, we will be having bake sales and collecting donations outside Safeway on N. Carefree, for UNICEF (United Nation’s Children’s Fund). ●Our November events, in honor of Veterans Day, will be to send care packages with supplies, letters and gifts, to soldiers deployed to Iraq. ● In December, we will be collecting items to donate to Life Support. NJHS Winter News Tis the season for giving! NJHS members lived up to the idea well before and long past the season ended. Back in October, Trick or Treat for UNICEF resulted in a donation of $470 to the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund. A huge effort to say thank you to deployed US troops followed in November. Banners, cards, photographs and letters were boxed up and sent to Special Tactics units in Iraq. If all goes well, everything should have arrived well before Christmas. December was full of fun, and useful projects. This included our annual holiday party, a Giving Tree for Life Support Charities, and C.A.R.E. sales to raise money for holiday food baskets for families in our Sabin community. Life Support is a local charity that assists families with infants and young children. Each NJHS student took gift tags from the tree that indicated needed items. They then earned the money and shopped for their donation. A representative group delivered everything on December 11. There was everything from cases of baby food to toys, formula, sleepers and stuffed animals. What a great feeling it was to know that we were able to make some families’ Christmases a little brighter. Our CARE sales, which were any snacks and baked goods that started with the letter C, A, R or E, raised $132. This money went towards the purchases needed for food baskets that were distributed to a number of needy families here at Sabin. If the generous hearts and compassionate spirits of these young people are an example of what’s to come, I have to say that our futures are in good hands.
