Sabin St. Baldrick’s 2006

Sabin students and staff shaved their heads for St. Baldricks. We had  93 students, 7 staff members, 2 parents, 1 grandparent and 1 younger sibling either cutting their hair or shaving their head at Friday's assembly. That is a total of 104 participants in the assembly. This is slightly over 12.5% of our students, so about 1 out of every 8 students at Sabin will either have a bald head or 10 inches of hair cut off. We have 28 8th graders, 33 7th graders and 32 6th graders in the event. Donations can still be made online on  Sabin St. Baldrick's website   We raised over $12,000 to help fight children's cancer.

It’s that time of the year again - time for St. Baldrick’s. St. Baldrick’s is a national fund raising event where people gather pledges in order to support the research and cure of children’s cancer. In return for collecting pledges, and to show support for those children and adults with cancer who undergo chemotherapy and lose all of their hair, the people collecting pledges have their heads shaved at sponsoring locations.

There is a group of students and staff members at Sabin who are committed to shave their heads (or cut off 10 inches of hair to donate to Locks of Love) in order to raise as much money as possible for CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation. We need your support to help raise this money. Two years ago we (Sabin Middle School) raised over $3,000 for the event, and this year we want to raise at least $5,000.

Here are some facts on children’s cancer:

* cancer kills more children every year than any other disease

* 12,500 children and teenagers are diagnosed with cancer each year

* to put in perspective, 74 children - almost 3 classrooms full - are diagnosed with cancer every school day

Any donation that you give will be greatly appreciated. All donations are tax deductible. All checks should be made out to St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Please write “Team Sabin -ID#15328889” on the memo line. If you want to donate to a certain person at Sabin, please include their name on the memo line as well.

This fund raiser is not for only those people who have had cancer, or know someone who has had or currently has cancer, but is also for those people yet to be diagnosed with cancer. It can strike anyone we know - students, family, friends. We (Team Sabin) think that children’s cancer is especially tragic, as most kids who die from it were never given a chance to fully reach their goals and dreams in life.

Donations can also be made online at the St. Baldrick’s web sight (http://www.stbaldricks.org/). Please look up our location (Sabin Middle School) and put your money towards our goal.

Please contact Paul Kaufer at Sabin Middle School if you have any questions. St. Baldrick’s Day is on Friday, March 17. We will be holding a school-wide assembly at 12:45 pm in the gymnasium to celebrate the event and to shave our heads in front of the students and staff of Sabin. On that day we will also be having a school wide hat day to support all the people shaving their heads. Students pay $0.50 to wear a hat to school on that day (3/17/06), and all the money raised will go towards the St. Baldrick’s cancer fund raiser. Students will also be given a chance to buy St. Patrick’s necklaces and bracelets with all proceeds going towards St. Baldrick’s.

Thanks for your support!

Thank you,

Team Sabin
