STUDENT GOVERNMENT NEWS:
The Sabin Student Council, also known as
STUCO, has gotten off to a great start this year. Early leadership came
from the officers who helped a new sponsor get organized and familiar with
the numerous activities and responsibilities of the group. Officers are:
President – Casey Parks
Vice-President –
Allison Wellborn
Senator - Cody Smith
Senator - Haylee
Ehrlich
Elections were held in Sept. so that
representatives from each team/grade could be selected. In order to run
for representative each student had to have a petitioned signed by fellow
students, recommendations from 4 teachers and had to be carrying a B
average. The successful representatives are: 8th
grade – Jenny
Murnane,
Katie Cardillo, Monica
Padeway and Lauren Blake; 7th
grade – Steven Archibald, and Mikeia Brown,
; 6th
grade – Jordan
Winters, Caitlyn Pierce, Allyssa Ross, and McKayla King.
Other students have been involved at various times but maintaining
membership is a challenging situation. Students have to maintain academic
eligibility, as well as citizenship, while making the time to follow
through with STUCO activities.
STUCO has successfully sponsored fun
filled spirit weeks and dances, Red Ribbon Week activities, drives and
donations for the Springs Rescue Mission, and canned goods to a local food
bank. We are currently involved in a pop tabs collection competition to
support the Ronald McDonald House. Students brought a colorful and proud
look to the community room by painting the walls in school colors and
designs. We have organized a Valentines for Soldiers campaign, and
offered a school store selling supplies.
You can also see them selling concessions
at home sporting events, and they are in the halls promoting events like
Crime Stopper Awareness. They are a very active and responsible group of
young people representing the school.
Upcoming projects include more dances and
activity nights, more concession stands, a penny drive for leukemia, more
spirit weeks, and other community services projects.
STUCO would also like to thank and
acknowledge the many parents in our school community who volunteer and
help out with all of our projects. We would not be experiencing the level
of success had it not been for their support and guidance.
