| Our
club has been very active the past several weeks.
On April 26th,
the club will be going to Chico Basin Ranch to assist the Rocky Mountain
Bird Observatory capture and band migratory songbirds.
On March 15th, our club visited the Humane Society. Mrs. Lynda Grove led
our group on a behind-the-scene tour. I’m sure the best time of the tour
was getting to interact with the donkeys, dogs, cats, rabbits, and rats. We
would like to thank Mrs. Grove for giving us her time and expertise. Thank
you also to Mrs. Kirkbride for help in chaperoning and driving. The
Kirkbrides have been with us on several occasions.
On January 20th,
we helped the Colorado Division of Wildlife feed the bighorn sheep in
Queen’s Canyon. We also helped do a daily count of the sheep.
On February 2nd, we went to Pueblo Lake
State Park for Eagle Days. We heard several presentations and got to see
the displays in the park headquarters. We also helped the Division of
Wildlife by selling donuts and hot chocolate. We earned over $80 for the
Pueblo Raptor Center. We were able to see several bald eagles on the lake
along with many different types of water fowl. Our club members helped park
visitors with the binoculars and spotting scopes. The highlight of the trip
was when Marcus Brown got to release a red-tailed hawk back into the wild.
We would like to thank all of our
adult volunteers: Brian Leatherman, Roy Grimm, and the Robert Beckner
family. We also would like to thank Deb and Londell Ackley of the Division
of Wildlife for giving us a great lesson about the bighorn sheep. Finally,
we would like to thank Steve Lucero of the Division of Wildlife for
providing our club with funds for the school bus.

The A.S.P.E.N. Club is sponsored by Mrs. DiCenso. The goal is to
experience nature and science through hands-on activities. They have
had many field trips through the Division of Wildlife where they performed
such duties as feeding and grooming the sheep. Guest speakers such as
Jennifer Rivers of Intel, who presented her “Cool
Science” chemistry demonstration, are a common occurrence. In
addition, students have made crafts, visited NORAD and taken their annual
trip to Chico Basin Ranch.
This club meets on Tuesdays after school in Mrs.
DiCenso's room.

These pictures show the
club participating in a mock rescue attempt. We had two gentlemen from the
Pikes Peak Search and Rescue team come to do a demo for us.
