I have a research paper to do.  Where do I start?

  1. Task Definition:  
    1. Define the problem:  What needs to be done?  What is my project or paper?
    2. Identify the information needed.  What questions need to be answered or explained?
       
  1.  Information Seeking Strategies:
    1.  Determine all possible sourcesShould I use books, electronic resources, or people?
    2. Select the best sources:  Which sources best help answer the questions or complete the project?
       
  1.  Location and Access: 
    1. Locate Sources:  Where can I find these resources?
    2. Find Information within sources.  (Indexes, bibliographies, further reading etc..)
       
  1.  Use of Information:  What can I use from these resources?
    1. Engage (e.g., read, hear, view)  Read books, watch videos, do electronic research.
    2. Extract relevant information.  Take notes on information that helps your project.
      Do Not Paraphrase. 

       
  1.  Synthesis:  What can I make to finish the job?
    1. Organize information from multiple sources.  Does my presentation or paper flow and make sense?
    2. Present the result.  (Do a presentation, turn in a final draft, etc.,).
       
  1.  Evaluation:  How will I know I did my job well?
    1. Judge the result (effectiveness).  Did I explain my research so people understand?
    2. Judge the process (efficiency).  Did I use my time well and get my project done in time?
