Rudy Parent Survey Comments

The following comments are from a parent survey administered in Spring 2006. The comments are sorted by area and are edited for misspellings and individuals proper names.

 Communication

·            Should have a conference in Spring as well…late Feb/Mar time frame.

·            I’m grateful for the weekly, hand written communication I receive from _____ _____. What a treat!

·            _____ _____ has been an amazing teacher!

·            I read books for parent recommendations.

·            The Friday Folder was the most informative last year than any other method used since.

·            Email with teacher would be nice.

·            I don’t know about the SALT. Maybe someone could visit or send a not about it?

·            I would like to see a parent/teacher conference in the spring also.

·            Rudy staff is wonderful!

·            I’m not real crazy about the grading system – hard to know where they are at – really.

·            I don’t like the grading system. I much rather chat with the teacher to understand right where my child is.

·            What is SALT? When do they meet? I do know about the PTCO. What is the difference?

·            SALT can advise the Principal, but makes no difference if she doesn’t listen. Every parent should have the opportunity for 2 conferences a year.

·            What about being a tutor or classroom volunteer – nothing to do with PTCO. Need spring conference.

·            Important papers should be seen on the day they become available.

·            Any information is good anytime.

·            I feel like I do not know what extra activities go on in the classroom (parties, programs, etc.).

·            See work on a daily basis, see important papers when they are given out and see community fliers when they are sent out.

·            I think the structure of Open House should be examined.

 Parental Involvement Comments

·            On average, 15-30.

·            I see the teachers every day when I drop my child off.

·            My daughter is 3 years old.

·            In preschool they do have some assignments. These are age appropriate.

·            I volunteer when my schedule allows. I am currently a full-time student.

·            Homework is excessive.

·            No calls for volunteer opportunities despite filling out volunteer forms.

·            I help every other week in my daughter’s class and every week in my son’s.

·            My child has 2 homework days…homework is not daily. We love it. We have more time to read on the other days.

·            I volunteer every other week, and occasionally more.

·            I am a full-time student and self-employed or I would volunteer more. Additionally, I am an Assistant Brownie Troop Leader.

·            Not a lot of school related work in K.

·            I teach in the Middle School for D11 – very difficult to volunteer.

·            Periodically volunteer in the classroom, but less than one time per month.

Learning Environment Comments

·            11. I don’t feel there is enough “order” and monitoring after school. It’s like a free-for-all child frenzy.

·            #14 Do we have community programs?

·            12/13/14. Have not witnessed.

·            I wish we could drop off children for breakfast in preschool (at the cafeteria).

·            The Rudy environment is very positive and safe.

·            Thank you for the updates on the mountain lion!

·            There was one incident between my granddaughter and _____ _____ in January with which I am very dissatisfied with _____ _____’s actions.

·            There was a young man on the playground that intimidated my daughter.

·            I do not agree with some teachers’ (one in particular) tactic of belittling students. My son would rather not do his homework at school than ask his teacher for help. What message is she (the teacher) trying to send? This needs to absolutely be addressed and resolved.

Quality of Instruction Comments

·            Though PE is not academic in nature, the physical activity is much needed – 3 times, 2 weeks would be better.

·            How about volleyball intramurals?

·            Science program is great!

·            3. I am not sure. My child is challenged enough. 5. HW seems excessive (30 min or more a day for 1st grade).

·            Art seems somewhat repetitive and unstimulating for my child. We do more at home than she does at school.

·            I am concerned with challenging my child to the appropriate level for him. He has stated that school is too easy for him. His teacher is trying to meet his needs, but it is a challenge.

·            5. My child could handle more homework without straining her.

·            No individualized instruction for high/low kids, curriculum?

·            Some of these do not apply to the preschool program.

·            I think the band grade should be included in the report cards and not counted separately. Classroom homework is excessive.

·            My child loves the extra programs (art, music, gym). These teachers are great!

·            Science? Love the Science Special.

·            I think D11 is doing a better job now, than in the 70s.

·            Preschool is not very individualized academically. Socially my child is learning a lot.

·            Do not yet have Band/Orchestra in 2nd grade. Do agree they are good programs. I do not believe a 2 teacher, split day class I the strongest format for 2nd grade.

·            _____ _____ is a terrific teacher – always helpful, friendly and concerned about my child.

·            Unaware of what homework is appropriate for my child. She may be able to handle more than given.

·            My child is not in band or orchestra yet, but I believe they are very good programs.

·            We very rarely see art projects or work sent home. We don’t have band/orchestra at 1st grade level.

·            We could use more homework to challenge our child.

 The strengths of Rudy are:

·            Experienced teachers! They love their students! They are!

·            The friendly staff and the strong emphasis on learning.

·            Friendly environment. Dedicated teachers.

·            The staff.

·            Everyone is so sweet and helpful. I enjoy seeing my son’s classroom and teachers.

·            Good, caring teachers, good leadership, extra activities, nice size classes (finally)! Parent volunteers. Most of all – friendly and kind front office personnel. We see them first!

·            Great school – we love it.

·            Caring, clean environment, teachers appear committed to the kids.

·            My child is happy there.

·            Staff in general is wonderful!

·            Caring, attentive teacher – _____!

·            Its employees.

·            From my experience with one teacher I would say Rudy cares about each child.

·            Great staff.

·            Wonderful, caring teachers, warm secretaries.

·            Rudy overall is very welcoming.

·            We have only been in Colorado Springs for 2 months. My son has been attending Rudy for the same amount of time. We are still evaluating the school.

·            Homework help /after school before school tutoring.

·            Curriculum that can be used vertically for every kid. Individualized instruction for kids who are lower and higher. Too much teaching to the CSAP. It is not necessary or working!

·            Great staff, safe environment.

·            Safety is of utmost importance.

·            Great teachers, fun family activities, promotes a feeling that families are welcome to come. Thank you for the new play equipment!

·            Great music and PE teachers and administration; hard-working, concerned and caring teachers.

·            _____ _____ is a wonderful, dedicated teacher.

·            Its history and relatively low teacher turnover.

·            Staff, school activities.

·            Caring teachers, newsletters (could be more frequent, though), Ice Cream Social (good way to start the year).

·            _____ _____! Your preschool program has been an even better experience for our son than we expected.

·            I enjoy Rudy – the teachers, parents, etc.

·            I am glad that other teachers know my child by her name. The office staff is friendly and nice as well as the teachers. Thank you for the new benches in the front of the school – looks nice!

·            It has a terrific view which can’t be destroyed by mismanagement.

·            Involving parents and students in social activities.

·            Teachers.

·            Clean. Teachers are very caring and want to help my son be successful.

·            The wonderful staff and teachers are the main strength of Rudy. I also feel the encouragement, and flexibility, of parent volunteers is great.

·            The faculty seems to be very kind and fair to all the children.

·            Dedicated teachers/faculty.

·            Dedicated teachers.

·            We are very pleased with my child’s teacher. We think the staff is always pleasant – good family friendly environment.

·            Teachers!

·            Listening to parents, fostering activities between students in different grades.

·            Communication levels with parents/students are EXCELLENT.

·            Strong sense of community, small school atmosphere, caring teachers.

·            I enjoy the teacher. My child enjoys going to school every day and it’s amazing how much she’s learning. I enjoy reading the Friday newsletters. It keeps me informed.

·            Professional and caring staff coupled with knowledge of State Standards = great success with students.

·            The adults that work there seem happy and friendly.

·            My child’s teacher is _____ _____, she is available, polite and friendly. My child has mastered skills more quickly and with less confusion while learning in her classroom.

·            Care and time given to each child.

·            Overall teachers seem to really care about the children and take the time to teach “requirements”, but also make the kids feel special. I also appreciate “flag down days” when it is cold. It is nice therefore safe and warm.

·            I feel the strengths of Rudy are that Rudy is a well-respected school, that strives for high achievement in education.

·            Support staff (office attendants), Art, Music and PE teachers.

·            The school has a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere for both students and families.

·            Supplemental programs, family involvement.

The area where Rudy needs improvement is:

·            I think that they need to update carpet, bathrooms, etc. Also, have lunches offered that are dairy free and nut free. I know that there is only a small percentage of students that have allergies, but mine is one of them.

·            Improvements to the building would be great! Ideally a larger gym would be wonderful.

·            Gifted and talented program is not reaching enough students. PTCO meetings after school – excludes all working parents.

·            Parking facility. I have to walk my child in and sign him in daily. The morning traffic makes this challenging.

·            Lunchtime too short. I have heard from other parents and my own kid that their kids come home starving and complaining. There is not enough time to eat.

·            Encouraging involvement of families – the playground equipment installation was great! The Bingo night is cool. Maybe a clean-up day once or twice a year – inside and out! People like to be helpful.

·            Work with my child to meet individual needs (high expectations, nudge him to grow…especially in reading. He seems to be stagnating.)

·            Playground supervision at recess.

·            The building/facility.

·            Better facilities (classrooms). I would like separate rooms, for a quieter learning environment.

·            ?

·            Communicating school events with more advance notice, more parent/teacher conferences.

·            More parent/teacher interaction/communication.

·            The Principal needs to be more friendly and approachable. The office staff needs to be more welcoming.

·            I know it would really be nice to have a separate gym & cafeteria. I wish the principal would visit preschool. I have not seen her in there ever. My child will be attending Rudy and it would be nice to know others in the office also.

·            Cafeteria/eating arrangements, art classes could use more in-depth and age appropriate art classes – not so much abstract art. Better communication on after-school activities.

·            Cold weather policy!

·            New playground needs many updates and more parking space is needed as well.

·            New carpet.

·            The crossing guard at the entrance of the school could be a little friendly.

·            Open classrooms – too noisy!

·            I think Rudy is a great school and my son is meeting and/or exceeding my expectations. Thank you for helping him succeed. Kids should be encouraged to bring a healthy snack and water to consume after lunch even in 4th and 5th grade.

·            Having a crossing guard down on the street earlier (someone is going to get hit by a car one day). The principal needs to have better communication skills with students, staff and parents. (Lots of unhappy people.) Have PTCO meetings at a time when all parents can attend, SALT meetings as well. Add more gym-time to schedule (not healthy to only have gym once a week). Why do CSAP scores keep coming in so low?

·            I think the children’s restrooms are dirty. There are times when there is no toilet paper. They could be much better.

·            The children’s restrooms need an overhaul. They are dirty and occasionally needing supplies.

·            I wish we had the money for a separate gym and cafeteria. I wish the meal pay program could be used for reduced meal prices. We have to pay $20 or more to use the phone or computer program. It is not helpful for Reduced paying prices.

·            Administration – staff attritions. Lets keep the good ones. Don’t drive them away.

·            I question whether the 4th and 5th graders will be prepared for Middle School. I am not impressed with the new 5th grade staff and have no idea where my child should be next year.

·            Less students.

·            Need better guidelines on weather issues. Children should not be outside with deep snow on the ground. Giving an elementary age child the choice to go out or stay in is not appropriate for this age group.

·            One of the Rudy secretaries is very rude every time I call and makes me feel like I am bothering her. Her name is _____! The others are great!

·            Need more playground equipment on the North (3,4,5th grade) side.

·            I believe that the children need more one-on-one time when there is an activity that he/she is not understanding.

·            Parking lot!

·            A more approachable administration.

·            More walls between classrooms. I would be constantly watching the traffic of students.

·            Need better speech and occupational therapy in PS.

·            Treat each behavior issue independently based upon child’s past history. Grouping or classifications based on behavioral incidents do NOT WORK! I suppose it’s obvious I am very unhappy with an issue involving _____ _____. In my book wrong is wrong and right is right based upon the incident and the child involved!

·            I would appreciate a little more homework so that I can fully assess what my child is learning.

·            My daughter was new at the beginning of school and seemed to have a hard time the first couple of weeks – making friends. I think it would have been easier for her if she were introduced to another new child instead of someone that already has friends, because after being showed around – she was left out. But all is well and she has friends now.

·            Consistency in discipline.

·            Sending home progress reports for children in tutoring!

·            Getting important information to parents in a timely manner – the letter about the mountain lion, Rudy Ridgerunner Awards. Helpfulness of the office staff – willingness to answer my questions, not just transfer me to someone’s voicemail.

·            The classrooms/building is aging and floors and walls are in bad shape. I know that can’t magically be fixed, but it does need attention at some point by D11.

·            Maybe listening in on their teaching staff. I know not all days are good days for every child, but when a question is asked of a teacher, shouldn’t a student receive help, not an overbearing attitude of resentment? What are teachers for, if not to help students learn?

·            It would be nice if the school was given more money from the district to make the classrooms more separate from each other. I’ve noticed sometimes the noise from the class next door can be distracting.

·            Dealings with disruptive students, administrative discipline.

·            When I speak to other parents that children go to other schools or districts I think that Rudy is a little boring with few activities for all the students. It seems that things like Christmas programs, track days, etc. are mainly based on 3rd graders and up. The Fun Days that replace track days for Kindergarten thru 2nd are just a chaotic and unorganized event. I am in NO way expressing my dislike of _____ _____, but feel the idea, as a whole, is not working. Why can’t the younger ones have an official track day or music program with a smaller scale???
