Welcome Parents/Guardians to the 2007-2008 school year!
My name is Mrs. Kay Heaberlin and I will be your child’s teacher. Some of you know me from last year because I had the privilege of teaching your child in first grade. I am beginning my 17th year here at Rudy Elementary. I have taught in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades. I believe that Rudy is one of the best schools in the district. I am originally from Spokane I have been married for 30 years and have 2 grown children. We just gained a wonderful daughter-in-law in July as our son got married. Our daughter goes to college in Abilene My husband and I enjoy traveling and learning about other cultures. I love being able to share with my students about the different places that I have been able to visit. I also enjoy reading, long walks and Starbucks. I know that this will be a wonderful year of learning. I look forward to seeing you on Thursday, August 23, 2007 at Open House.
Mission Statement: Our second grade class will be a caring community. We will be kind to each other. We will do our best in all areas of learning.

Expectations: · I expect children to arrive to school on time ready to learn. · I expect planners to be signed each time your child brings it home. · I expect homework to be turned in on time. · I expect Friday folders to be signed and turned in the following school day. · I expect parents to be educational partners with their child. · You can expect me to treat your child with respect. · You can expect me to teach your child at his/her learning ability. · You can expect to hear from me when your child is in need of extra help or when your child is having some behavior issues. · You can expect to hear from me when your child does a lot of neat and positive things.
I like to think of education as a pie cut in thirds. One third=teacher responsibility, one third=student responsibility, one third=parent responsibility.
Homework: Students will have homework in math, spelling and reading daily. I will not assign homework on the weekends. I believe students need to have a break and spend quality time with their families. Homework is due the following day unless otherwise specified.
Planners: Your child will bring home a planner with assignments written in it. Please make sure his/her assignments are completed and then sign the planner by the “X”. Your child needs to have that everyday at school.
Reading at Home Program: Parents as Reading partners is a reading at home program that I have in my classroom. I will explain this at open house and hand out the papers.
Parties: Children like to celebrate their birthdays here at school. When your child has a birthday you may send in treats. Please do not send cupcakes. They are extremely messy and never come out of the carpet. Please send something very easy, such as cookies, small candy bars, etc. If you choose not to send anything that is okay too. This is your choice. I need to know of any allergies your child might have. Friday Store: Every other week I will have a Friday store. Children will earn tickets for appropriate behavior and can spend those tickets at the store. If you have any unbroken small toys that you would like to donate I will take them. Those make great Friday store items. Volunteers: I love having volunteers in the classroom. I will have a sign up sheet the night of open house. Signing out your child: You must sign out your child in the office and they will call for him/her to be excused. Please do not come down to the room to pull you child out because I will not be able to let him/her go.
