SALT Minutes for Meeting held September 7th, 2006

 In attendance:

Sue Mulhern, Christina Rochelle, Wayne Theurer, Caron Reilly, Anne Reigel, Kurt McGee

First agenda item was to establish the norms for the meetings.  They are:

The meetings will start and end on time

Stay focused

All members will contribute and all voices will be heard—the meeting is to be a discussion of issues vs. just a presentation.

The next items were discussed it the purpose of the SALT meetings.

~~An accountability committee is required for all schools by state law.

~~The SALT members are an advisory body to the principal

~~One of the main purposes of the committee is to review the School Improvement Plan and achievement data for the school.

Other items discussed:

 Alignment of SALT and PTCO

All decisions are in alignment with the School Improvement Plan and the school data

SALT is a decision making body and the PTCO is an action body that acts on the decisions made by SALT.

School Improvement Plan (SIP)

~~A new plan is required by the District each school year

~~ A copy of the SIP has been submitted to the District office for review.

~~Full copies of the document are available to any parent.

~~Highlights of the plan are attached to this email

Some items discussed from the SIP

~~The discrepancy in achievement between the students who qualify for free and reduced lunch and those that do not is significant—approximately 16-20 points difference.  Approximately 25% of the students at Rudy qualify for free or reduced lunch.

~~The free and reduced status is confidential information that teachers are not to know.

~~As the principal, I can access this information, but may not pass on the names of the students.  This makes planning and working with these students an additional challenge.

~~Students who are free and reduced status and have been here at Rudy still score lower than students who are not free and reduced.

~~Military transiency was also mentioned

Next Steps/Future Agenda Items

~~Discussion of steps we are taking as a school as a result of the data?

~~Development of a schoolwide reading program.

~~Further development and maintenance of the leveled book room

~~Absences and tardies

~~Create procedures and systems for communicating the actions/discussions of the SALT meeting to the rest of the staff.

~~Marketing Rudy with special programs once the new school is built—what do we want to be our focus?
