Fourth Grade Curriculum:

Language Arts (Grammar and Conventions): We use a program called Daily Language Instruction (DLI).  Students have daily practice and a test on Fridays which will assess the lesson for that week.

Reading : I use novels from the leveled book room and Junior Great Books to teach the e-skills in reading.  Your child will be placed in a reading group within the class and taught with material geared at his or her instructional reading level. My exciting reading program consists of vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and short-constructed response instruction.

Writing: I use the Writers’ Workshop approach to teach writing.  Students receive a daily writing lesson and then they have forty minutes to practice the skill I taught.  I conference one-on-one with your child during this writing time. Students work through the writing process and publish their work in many different ways: class books and the “Spectacular Work” board. I will also publish some writing on the website. Fourth graders will learn about the different genres of writing and produce proficient writing using the Six-Traits of Writing and Step-Up to Writing.  They will write multi-paragraph, typed expository and persuasive essays, stories, and poems.

Math: We use Everyday Mathematics published by the University of Chicago Mathematics Project . Students are expected to know their math facts with at least 80% proficiency.  We take a facts test every Friday, so be sure your child studies math facts.

Grades:

Students will be assessed on a weekly basis to see whether or not they have grasped the concepts taught.  I take grades using quizzes, tests, projects and in-class assignments.  Students will know in advanced what I am taking a grade on.  Homework is practice and therefore not graded; however they will receive credit for their homework.  If a student is teetering between two letter grades, homework completion will be taken into consideration.  Students receive letter grades as well as standard marks for all subjects.

Homework:

Students will have the following assignments each night (Monday-Thursday) unless they finish the work in class. Homework is not assigned on Fridays, unless your child is behind in work. At times, there will be projects sent home to work on.

Typing- I would like my students to be proficient at typing and word-process their writing assignments; therefore the first two-three weeks of school, students should practice typing using a computer program.  If you don’t have one installed on your computer, your child can sign up for typing class at school. Please have your child practice typing four days a week for 20 minutes.

Writing- students need to type their writing assignments at home and save their work to a disk or flash drive.  Rudy Elementary has implemented a science and technology focus; therefore, students are expected to use this technology.  If students don’t have access to a computer, they can stay after school to complete their work. Students should bring their disk or flash drive to school each day.

Math Study Link- this assignment will allow students to practice the skill taught that day. An answer key will be sent home for parents to check work. Look for this in the Everyday Math Parent Letter that I send home before we begin each math unit. In addition, I want children to practice their math facts at least three nights per week.  Please purchase multiplication/division and addition/subtraction flash cards.

Spelling-(Monday-5 times each, Tuesday-sentences, Wednesday-crossword, Thursday-abc order and 3 times each).  A pretest is given on Mondays and a post-test on Fridays. If students have 100% mastery as determined by the pretest, they will have an alternate assignment.

Reading : Students should choose a library book at their level to read each night for 15-30 minutes.  Record the book and pages read in the planner.

Planner signing: Parents are expected to check that their child has completed the work and sign the planner each night.  I check the planner each day.

Late assignments: Homework is due the next day.  Late assignments will be accepted for half credit only and will affect letter grade.  Please encourage your child to complete and turn in work on time. Students fill out a late assignment note and staple it to their planner, so you will know when your child is not completing the work.  Students who have a pattern of turning assignments in late will call home. I have a three times and you’re out policy. Three late assignments and students call parents during their recess.

Behavior Management System:

My students and I have created classroom rules for this year.  Please see the contract which explains this in detail.  I use the card system (green, yellow, red). Students may lose recess and call parents for misbehavior.  Students can be sent to the office for Level 2 infractions. It is essential that I have a smooth-running classroom, so maximum learning takes place.

Lunch and Snacks:

Lunch: Our lunch time this year is at 11:45.  Please send lunch money in an envelope with your child’s first and last name, my name, what the money is for, and the amount.  Please do not send loose money.

Snack: please send a healthy snack with your child and a water bottle.

Birthdays

Ms. Carr loves to celebrate student birthdays!  You may send in a snack to share with the class.  Please send in something easy to pass out: cookies, cupcakes, for example.

I think that is everything!  Please contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to working with you this year.

Sincerely,

Ms. Carr
