Help Kids Steer Clear of Diabetes

Want to help your child avoid the many heath risks associated with diabetes? Then teach him or her to spot — and steer clear of — so-called simple sugars. A recent study by experts at the University of Southern California found a strong connection between the amount of sugar kids ate and whether or not they showed the first signs of type 2 diabetes. Sure enough, kids who reported eating sugar every day had clear signs that they were headed for problems. Even more shocking, nearly 40 percent of the sugar they were eating came from soda or sugary "fruit" drinks.

So what can you do to help children? Educate them about the impact too much sugar has on their health, and help them learn to read food labels and ingredient lists to identify high-sugar foods. Keep plenty of fresh fruit in your house to replace sweet snacks, and encourage your kids to quench their thirst with nature's perfect drink — water! — instead of sweet drinks. Remember, sugar itself isn't bad, but you can definitely have too much of a good thing!

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP)

Helping Employees Balance Work, Life and Family.

PROFILE: EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM IS A BENEFIT PROVIDED TO YOU BY YOUR EMPLOYER

Your employer recognizes that, at any time, you or your family members may experience personal difficulties which may seriously affect your life.  If these difficulties go unresolved for a period of time they are likely to impair your ability to cope as effectively at home and on the job. Because of this, your employer encourages you to seek help early to prevent small problems from getting out of hand and creating greater problems. They know that what goes on at home affects your job and what goes on at work affects your family. All School District 11 employees and their immediate family members are eligible for five (5) counseling sessions per problem per year.

WHAT YOU GET AT EAP IS QUALITY, CONFIDENTIAL TREATMENT AT NO COST TO YOU

Profile EAP is a group of well-trained professional counselors that utilize a short-term therapy approach designed to bring helpful results in a short period of time. The counselors will help you outline what goals you have and what you believe needs to change. Through their assessment skills they might determine that an issue will require more in-depth counseling and then they will make an appropriate referral. EAP services are strictly confidential and free of charge. Your use of our services is not reported to your employer.
