| September 8, 2006 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Peggy Altoff, 520-2026 D-11 Social Studies Facilitator Is President of NCSS D-11 Social Studies Facilitator Peggy Altoff has begun a 12-month term as president of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), the nation’s largest professional organization for social studies educators. Peggy also serves on the board of directors of the Colorado Council for the Social Studies. Social studies is the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence. The NCSS has approximately 26,000 members in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 69 foreign countries and serves as an umbrella organization for K-16 teachers of civics, history, geography, economics, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology and law-related ed Peggy says, “NCSS exists to engage and support educators in strengthening and advocating for social studies, and it is through the passion and persistence of our members that this occurs. In the last few months, NCSS has been ‘advocating’ by submitting testimony to the House Education and Workforce Committee related to NCLB. In addition, NCSS was one of 82 national education, civil rights, religious and civic organizations to sign on to the ‘Joint Organizational Statement on NCLB’ calling for a major overhaul of the federal K-12 education law.” |
