Student Matters
(Revised 8/18/06)
Attendance/Tardiness
Teachers are expected to take attendance in the morning on their computer. Students arriving late to school must first stop by the office and get a tardy slip. If a student enters your classroom late without a tardy slip, ask them to return to the office promptly. This allows the secretaries to change an “absence” to a “tardy”.
Likewise, if a student becomes ill during the day or needs to leave early for an appointment, the student must be signed out first in the office by a parent or guardian. Never allow a student to leave school early unattended. Students may not return home after school has begun to retrieve forgotten homework, permission slips, lunch money or instruments, etc. There are no exceptions to this rule.
Never let a parent leave with a student directly from the classroom. Please direct the parent to the office and the office will call the classroom to get the student. If you receive a note from home indicating a student must leave school during the day or providing an excuse for an earlier absence, please send the note to the office.
Student Injuries/Illness
Band-Aids and frozen sponges are available in the office for student use. If a student receives a head injury, parents must be notified. Manuel, Nancy, and Marcia are Red Cross First Aid and CPR certified and can handle most minor injuries. Students may come to the office and lay down on the cot for 15 minutes if not feeling well. If a student is running a fever or vomits, a parent will be called without delay. Notify Jessie immediately if there is vomit to be cleaned up! Regarding head lice, rashes and the like: Be discreet. Don’t touch. Notify the office. The nurse’s schedule is sporadic at best, so do not depend on her being available.
Head Injuries
In the case of head injury (even minor), a Minor Head Injury Letter must be sent home to the parent and the parent should be notified by phone the same day. Letters are available in the office.
Student Medication
School personnel cannot administer medication unless a physician prescribes it and a completed Medication Form is on file with the school. Medication under these requirements will be kept locked in the office and will be dispensed only by authorized persons. Under no circumstances should a student keep any medication, including over-the-counter drugs such as aspirin and cough drops, in a desk or backpack.
Inside Recess
When the outside temperature is less than 15ºF (including wind chill), or when precipitation is present, students will stay indoors for recess. Supervision is determined by the regular duty schedule.
