School Wide Discipline Plan and Playground Expectations

HOME

(Revised 11/19/08)

Because we want Pike to be a safe place for students to learn, we have established three simple rules:  Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe.  Students are expected to abide by these rules on the school grounds, going to and from school, and at any event where our school is represented, regardless of location.  One of our major goals at Pike Elementary is to maintain a learning atmosphere which is safe, friendly and challenging, and each student has a role in this.  Let's LEARN, HAVE FUN and BE SAFE!

Examples for the Three Rules

At Pike Elementary, we believe that success depends on teamwork.  Follow-through and support by parents at home are very important.

The discipline code at Pike Elementary is in compliance with the School District 11 Student Discipline Code.

Playground Expectations:

Students eating breakfast can enter the building at 7:30 a.m.  Because there is no supervision before that time, parents are responsible for their students.  For safety reasons, please do not allow your child to arrive before 7:30.  In the event of cold weather when the temperature is below 20 degrees, all students will be allowed into the school when they arrive starting at 7:30.  Playground supervision begins at 7:45 a.m.

On the playground, students will be expected to follow game rules and show good sportsmanship.  Students are to line up immediately when the bell rings or whistle blows.  Playground equipment should be put away in the rubber bin.  During recess, students are to follow all directions given by playground staff.  All students are trained in the proper behavior on the playground.  The following activities are NOT allowed:

·        Pushing, shoving, wrestling, fighting, pulling other’s clothing

·        Throwing rocks, dirt, grass or snowballs

·        Standing on the slide or bars or improperly using equipment

·        Hitting the ball so hard that it goes on the roof

·        Kicking the balls while on the blacktop

Hall and Restroom Expectations:

Because classes are in session throughout the day, students traveling in the hallway should be quiet.  Students in the hallway must  have a pass from their teacher.  This will help the staff know that students have permission to be out of class.

Students are to use the restroom, wash their hands, and return to class.  Playing in the restroom is not allowed.  Restrooms are to be left in good condition.  Please throw away trash in the containers.  Please report any restroom problems to an adult.

Lunchroom Expectations:

Students will ….

Observe good dining room manners at the table

Take only a single serving and eat what is taken

Take turns and keep hands to self

Not push or cut in line

Leave the table and surrounding area clean and orderly

Put trash in the proper container

Not throw, flip or spit food

Not crush milk cartons or pop lunch bags

Talk in a normal tone of voice

Leave the lunchroom and the building in an orderly manner – no running

Bring a coat to lunch on cold weather days

Watch for the three attention getting signals: hand-up, clapping or light flickering.

Detention:

Detention  may take place before school, during lunch or after school (no more than 20 minutes). It should be assigned as needed by the classroom teacher or specialist. The staff member assigning detention should make arrangements for supervision by themselves or another staff member. When a student receives a referral, the principal may assign detention.

Suspension:

For more serious infractions, suspension may be assigned by the principal or designee to take place in or out of school for typically one to three days. Review the School wide Discipline Plan for how suspensions are implemented following multiple referrals.

Classroom Card System:

The progressive color card system is utilized to reflect student behavior.  All classrooms, K-5 use the same discipline system. The teacher determines if a student’s behavior is inappropriate and requires the student to “flip a card” as a consequence for not following school expectations (be responsible, safe and respectful).  Each child has several opportunities to modify his/her behavior.  The cards are placed in the following order:

Green Card.............. Doing Great

Yellow Card............. Verbal Warning

Blue Card................. Time-Out or lost minutes at recess on the yellow square or in a

                                      timeout classroom

Orange Card............ Teacher will contact parent by phone, note or in person

Red Card.................. Referral to Principal – parent contacted

In grades K-3,, cards will come home each day with a short note describing any inappropriate behavior.  In grades 4 and 5, behavior colors are recorded in the student planner on a daily basis.  Parents, if your child does not bring home a card each day, please call or drop by to check on behavior.
