(Revised 11/19/08)
Because we want Pike to be a safe place for students to learn, we have established three simple rules: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. Students are expected to abide by these rules on the school grounds, going to and from school, and at any event where our school is represented, regardless of location. One of our major goals at Pike Elementary is to maintain a learning atmosphere which is safe, friendly and challenging, and each student has a role in this. Let's LEARN, HAVE FUN and BE SAFE!

Playground Expectations:
Students eating breakfast can enter the building at 7:30 a.m. Because there is no supervision before that time, parents are responsible for their students. For safety reasons, please do not allow your child to arrive before 7:30. In the event of cold weather when the temperature is below 20 degrees, all students will be allowed into the school when they arrive starting at 7:30. Playground supervision begins at 7:45 a.m.
On the playground, students will be expected to follow game rules and show good sportsmanship. Students are to line up immediately when the bell rings or whistle blows. Playground equipment should be put away in the rubber bin. During recess, students are to follow all directions given by playground staff. All students are trained in the proper behavior on the playground. The following activities are NOT allowed:
· Pushing, shoving, wrestling, fighting, pulling other’s clothing
· Throwing rocks, dirt, grass or snowballs
· Standing on the slide or bars or improperly using equipment

Suspension:
For more serious infractions, suspension may be assigned by the principal or designee to take place in or out of school for typically one to three days. Review the School wide Discipline Plan for how suspensions are implemented following multiple referrals.
The progressive color card system is utilized to reflect student behavior. All classrooms, K-5 use the same discipline system. The teacher determines if a student’s behavior is inappropriate and requires the student to “flip a card” as a consequence for not following school expectations (be responsible, safe and respectful). Each child has several opportunities to modify his/her behavior. The cards are placed in the following order:
Green Card.............. Doing Great
Yellow Card............. Verbal Warning
Blue Card................. Time-Out or lost minutes at recess on the yellow square or in a
timeout classroom
Orange Card............ Teacher will contact parent by phone, note or in person
Red Card.................. Referral to Principal – parent contacted
In grades K-3,, cards will come home each day with a short note describing any inappropriate behavior. In grades 4 and 5, behavior colors are recorded in the student planner on a daily basis. Parents, if your child does not bring home a card each day, please call or drop by to check on behavior.
