Traditionally, elementary
school students are taught all the core subjects by one teacher. The teacher
shifts gears from math to reading to writing to science to social studies.
Rather than just “scratching the surface” in so many areas, teachers in
Pike’s innovative Intermediate Learning Academy (ILA) specialize in one or two
subjects, allowing them to design lessons that are seamless across grade levels.
So, instead of shifting from subject to subject, the teachers change classrooms,
teaching the same subject to students in grades 3, 4 and 5. Students will have
the same teachers in Math, Writing and Science/Social Studies and Technology as
they travel through the intermediate grades.
Research shows that this approach is effective and results in higher
student achievement. It also helps
prepare students for their middle school years.
The
ILA teaching team collaborates regularly and monitors student progress. Students
benefit from a variety of teaching approaches, and learn to adapt to the
strengths of each instructor. The principal meets with each instructor regularly
to discuss student progress.
To
provide additional intervention opportunities, the Intermediate Learning Academy
offers after school academic clubs providing high quality, hands-on enrichment
activities and additional practice for students needing extra time.

Manuel Ramsey, Principal
“Learning
has become a collaborative process to the benefit of the students. The teaching
is very interactive, helping students explore the world around them.”
Hillary Pohlmann, Library Technology Educator
“It’s
an advantage having the kids stay in the same class, while teachers rotate.
Teachers can focus on one subject rather than adjusting to all areas. My
daughter enjoys the change of teachers, and it helps her adapt to a variety of
teaching styles - she’ll be better prepared for middle school.”
